Broncos Notch First Road Win at Penn

PHILADELPHIA - A Katy Oehring game-winning goal powered the Boise State soccer team (5-6-1) to its first road win of the season as the Broncos defeated Penn, 1-0, Sunday.

Boise State found its goal in the 54th minute off a set piece, one of the Broncos' most dangerous weapons this season. After a Penn foul, Kelsey Nicassio took a free kick from 35 yards out on the left side. Her ball bent into the box which forced the Penn goalkeeper to charge but she failed to secure the ball which continued to bounce around the box. Oehring was able to extend a leg and poke the ball into an open net for her third goal of the season.

The goal was a good sign for the Broncos who are now 5-0-0 when scoring the first goal in a match.

Maddy McDevitt was solid in between the pipes for Boise State. The redshirt sophomore earned her third shutout of the season making four saves, including a couple of diving stops in the final 15 minutes as the Quakers were attacking.

Boise State was outshot 15-9 by Penn after the Broncos had a 7-5 shots advantage at the half. Many of Penn's chances came toward the end of the match when Boise State pulled back into its defensive shell.

Oehring and freshman Brooke Heidemann led the team with two shots apiece and were the only two Broncos to put shots on goal.

The Broncos will begin Mountain West play next week with the conference-opener in Albuquerque, N.M. against reigning league champion New Mexico, Friday, Sept. 28.
