Broncos Blank Sun Devils, 2-0

Sept. 20, 2013

TEMPE, Ariz. The Boise State soccer team travelled down to Tempe, Ariz., to take on the Arizona State Sun Devils. Junior Shannon Schueren found the top right corner and collected her second goal of the season in the 57th minute. And with two seconds left on the game clock, sophomore Brooke Heidemann netted her fifth goal of the season. With the win tonight, the Broncos are undefeated against Pac-12 teams this season.

Both teams played an even game in the first half. Coming into the second half, the Sun Devils forced the Broncos to play more of a defensive game. Boise State stopped an Arizona State attack and started a run. Kayla Tucker dribbled down the right flank and found Schueren in the box. Schueren caught the ASU keeper off balance with a volley and found the top right corner of the net.

Arizona State geared up its offensive attacks after the Boise State goal. The Sun Devils forced three free kicks in the last five minutes, but the Bronco defense shut down every opportunity. Goalkeeper Maddy McDevitt made six saves tonight, and paired with defenders Mikhaila Bowden and Hailey DeVries, did not allow a Sun Devil goal.

With the play clock winding down, the Broncos stopped a Sun Devil free kick. The Broncos started a counter attack and Heidemann scored a goal in the top left corner from 25 yards out with two seconds left on the clock.

"Arizona State has very good players and and we focused on stopping them," explained head coach Jim Thomas. "When you play very good players, you have to focus on not losing your mind when a good player does something good. Our team did a great job managing that. Bowden and DeVries made an adjustment at half and they are the reason we won the game. They are the reason our record is 5-2-2. Our defense does a great job of listening and applying what our coaching staff tells them. And Maddy McDevittis a tough kid. She got absolutely football-leveled and got back up and started making saves again. I think we were the more athletic team. The Arizona State coaching staff were yelling to their players to find their legs in the last ten minutes and we definitely dodged a bullet with their free kicks at the end. The Sun Devils had good opportunities and we fouled when we needed to. I know all the Pac-12 teams really well. I love the players in that conference and I think that's the direction the US National team needs to follow, very technical play, and capitalizing from breakdowns. We played three Pac-12 teams and finished undefeated. I can't stress it enough, it is a heck of an achievement. More often than not there's two teams in the final four from that conference. But we didn't survive those games, we beat them. We had five overtime games and we got rid of two Pac-12 teams in regulation. That's huge. I think Rebe said it best tonight: this was a family win."

Boise State moves to 5-2-2 for the season. The Broncos head to Waco, Texas to matchup against Baylor on Sunday at noon MT.
