BOISE, Idaho - The Boise State soccer team continued its strong play at the Boas Soccer Complex with a 2-0 win over Nebraska-Omaha, Friday. The Broncos (4-5-0) are now 4-1-0 at home this season.
The scoring started with a goal from Lauren Hickok in the 48th minute. The senior midfielder took a through-ball played up by Rebe Wolverton, took a touch as the Maverick goalkeeper charged out of her six yard box, and sent it into the right side of the goal to mark her second of the season. It did not take long for the Broncos to strike again, as Gabby Garcia made a run up the left side of the field and cut into the 18-yard box where she was taken down from behind in the 55th minute. The Broncos were awarded a penalty kick to be taken by Shannon Schueren. Schueren approached the ball slowly before taking aim at the left side of the goal. This time the Maverick goalkeeper made a stop but kept the ball in play. Schueren followed for the rebound and scored past the keeper who was still out of position. It was like Déjà vu for the sophomore from Bothell, Wash., who finished an almost identical play against Eastern Washington last weekend. Schueren has now contributed points in four-consecutive matches which is tied for third in the Boise State season record book. While Nebraska-Omaha did have some dangerous chances, the Boise State controlled possession and were the aggressors most of the match. The Broncos finished with a 28-7 shots advantage and put 10 shots on goal compared to the Mavericks' three. The 28 shots is the most the Blue and Orange have taken since 2009 and ranks fourth on the all-time list. Maddy McDevitt played a full 90 minutes in goal, garnering her second shutout of the season. Boise State will look to get back to the .500 mark, Sunday when they face Utah. Kickoff is slated for 2 p.m. at the Boas Soccer Complex. Utah defeated Portland State 2-0, Friday. |
