Bronco Gymnastics Inks Standout Gymnast Fiona Leslie to 2008-09 Roster

BOISE, Idaho The Boise State gymnastics program, led by co-head coaches Tina Bird and Neil Resnick, is pleased to announce the signing of a National Letter of Intent by Fiona Leslie. The New York City native will plan to join the Broncos for the 2008-09 season as a freshman.

A highly competitive club gymnast, Leslie competed for the Chelsea Piers Gymnastics Team based in New York. There she began her career at age 12 and competed as an all-around athlete under head coach Ann Kist.

A two-year Level 10 competitor, Leslie recently earned the title of the 2008 Region 6 All-Around Champion with a score of 37.075. In the same competition she snagged first place finishes on bars (9.575) and beam (9.20) and finished second on floor (9.525). She also placed 19th in the all-around at the 2008 Junior Olympic (J.O.) National Championships in mid-May with a score of 37.250. There she had an excellent performance on bars, earning her a score of 9.625 and an eighth place tie.

“We initially recruited her for beam and floor,” explained Resnick. “Her bars have gotten better though, and after her performance at J.O.’s she will most likely be competing on bars next season too.”

In her first season as a Level 10 competitor, Leslie placed 15th in the all-around (37.30) and eighth on beam (9.375) at the 2007 J.O. Nationals. That same season she was the Region 6 Champion in the all-around scoring the highest all-around score for all Level 10 age groups. At the 2007 Region 6 Championships she also placed first on bars and beam while finishing third on floor and vault.

“Fiona’s fierce competitive nature, high level of skill and outstanding showmanship will make her a great addition to the 2009 Bronco gymnastics team,” said Resnick.

Outside of gymnastics, Leslie lives a unique life. She attends the Professional Performing Arts School (PPAS) which is a boutique public school near Times Square. As the only athlete at PPAS Leslie studies singing, acting and dance along with her regular courses of academic study. Being a New York native, Leslie is also a big Yankee’s fan and attends as many games as possible.
