Boise State Heads to 2012 Fayetteville Regional

BOISE, Idaho - The No. 15-ranked Boise State gymnastics team learned Monday (March 26) it will be traveling to the Fayetteville (South Central) Regional to compete in the 2012 NCAA Gymnastics Regionals Saturday, April 7, at the Barnhill Arena at 4 p.m. (CT).

The Broncos hold the No. 3 seed in the region, sitting behind No. 1 seed UCLA, who is also ranked No. 3 in the nation. Host school and No. 2 seed Arkansas sits at No. 10 in the national rankings this week, while  No. 19 Missouri, No. 29 New Hampshire and No. 34 Maryland round out the Fayetteville Regional's teams that will compete for a chance to advance to the NCAA National Championships.

Boise State has been selected to start their six-rotation competition on a 'bye-before-bars', followed by competing on the uneven bars in rotation two, balance beam in rotation three and another bye in rotation four. They continue on to floor exercise in rotation five and end the meet on vault. The Broncos will follow UCLA and be followed by Missouri in the rotation order.

The 2012 regional selection marks the fifth for the Boise State Broncos under current co-head coaches Neil Resnick and Tina Bird. The regional invitation is also the fifth straight for the reigning coaches as well as the 26 th regional invitation in program history. The highest the Broncos have ever placed at a regional meet was third, doing so in 2009 and 2011. The 2011 season was their closest shot at earning a top-two spot and advancing to the NCAA National meet, missing the second-place finish by only .025 of a point. Broncos Amy Glass and Bekah Gher advanced as individual competitors last season in the all-around and balance beam, respectively.

Six teams, five all-around competitors (who are not on a qualifying team) and one individual event specialist per event (who has a minimum Regional Qualifying Score (RQS) of 9.4) were named to each of the six predetermined regional host sites.

The top-18 teams are seeded on a national basis, based on RQS. Teams 19-36 are organized into three pods (19-24, 25-30 and 31-36) and placed geographically at one of the six sites, beginning with teams 19-24 followed by teams 25-30 and then finally teams 31-36. All-around competitors and event specialists are assigned to their respective geographic region or the designated site for their region.

Other schools hosting regional meets include: Auburn University, University of Illinois - Champaign, North Carolina State University, University of Utah and University of Washington. All regionals will be conducted April 7 with start times between 4 and 6 p.m. local time.

The top two teams and top two all-around competitors (who are not on an advancing team) from each regional will receive and automatic berth to the national meet in Duluth, Ga., April 20-22, at the Gwinnett Center.

In addition, the event winners at each regional will advance to the national championships (in that event only) if they are not a part of a qualifying team or an all-around qualifier.
