Senior Lindsay Ward Named WAC Specialist of the Week

DENVER, Colo. Boise State’s Lindsay Ward has been named the Western Athletic Conference Specialist of the Week for the week of Mar. 17-23. This is Ward’s third Specialist of the Week award this season, also picking up honors during the weeks of Jan. 21-27 and Feb. 4-10.

Ward, a senior from Las Vegas Nev. (Las Vegas HS) recorded a 9.925 on beam last week, improving on her season best by .50. Her win on beam was over California’s Bridgett Glass, who placed second in the event with a 9.900. The victory in the event marks Ward’s fifth win of the season on beam, tying her own Boise State single season record of wins on the apparatus set in 2005. Ward now has a school-record 18 career wins on beam.

Southern Utah’s Elise Wheeler has been named the Western Athletic Conference Gymnast of the Week after capturing two consecutive all-around titles last week. She posted a career-high 39.325 to win the all-around against Brigham Young. The mark is the third-highest score in Southern Utah history. Wheeler also tied the school record on uneven bars with a 9.900 in the dual meet with BYU. She also won the all-around title against Utah State with a score of 39.250. Wheeler helped her team to first place finishes in both meets last week.

Other Specialist of the Week nominees included: Cal State Fullerton freshman Maddie Steinauer scored a 9.825 on vault to win the event in a three-way meet in Arizona ... Sacramento State freshman Alycia Chan posted a career-best 9.875 on vault to help her team win the event ... San Jose State freshman Shanice Howard registered a season-best 9.850 on vault and a 9.850 on floor ... Southern Utah freshman Jenna Vogt scored career highs of 9.875 on bars and 9.850 on floor last week ... Utah State freshman Nicole Simoneau won bars with a career-best 9.900, tying her for fourth on USU’s all-time bars list.

Other Gymnast of the Week nominees included: Boise State freshman Hannah Redmon picked up three wins last week, taking vault, floor and all-around titles ... Cal State Fullerton freshman Alaina Baker finished third in the all-around with a 38.875, and tied for first on floor with a 9.875 ... Sacramento State junior Marina Borisova scored a season-high 39.275 and finished second in the all-around in a four-team meet ... Utah State senior Megan Tschida won the title on floor with a season-high 9.900, which ranks fourth-best all-time at USU.
