Sandmire Says Good-bye In Final Home Meet

BOISE, Idaho – Led by wins on three of four events, Friday, at the Taco Bell Arena, the Boise State University gymnastics team gave head coach Sam Sandmire something to remember in what was the final home meet of her career.

After 20 years of greatness, Sandmire is retiring from the coaching profession. And in front of a throng of fans, parents, administrators, and former Bronco gymnasts, Sandmire led her squad to one of its best performances of the season.

Though the Aggies of Utah State University were able to leave with a win (194.775-192.725), the Broncos notched season bests in three events: 49.025 on vault, 49.050 on bars and 48.675 on floor.

Highlighting the Broncos’ season bests were a trio of 9.925s. Freshman DeAvera Todd scored 9.925 on both vault and bars, winning each event. Senior Kristin Aldrich posted a 9.925 of her own on floor, capturing the first title of her career on the event in the final home meet of her career.

The victory on vault was Todd’s sixth of the year, tied for third-most all-time in a single season. Only a freshman, Todd’s six career victories are also tied for sixth all-time. The victory on bars was her second of the season.

Freshmen Yvette Leizorek and Katelyn O'Donnell also had impressive evenings. Leizorek posted career highs on vault (9.825) and bars (9.825) en route to finishing in the top three in each of her events. O’Donnell’s second place 9.900 on bars was a career high, and stood as the team’s top score on the event this season until Todd’s winning mark. O’Donnell’s 9.700 on floor was also a career high.

“Tonight was an incredible evening,” Sandmire said. “All of the Boise State coaches, staff and administrators made my night very special. It was a great way to go out. I really want to thank the fans for all of their support over the years.”

Sandmire isn’t riding into the sunset just yet, however. She and the Broncos still have the WAC Championships to look to.

“We have hit every event this year, but there has only been once all season that we hit all four in one evening,” Sandmire said. “When this team puts it together, we’re going to be dangerous. We’re looking forward to having that opportunity at WAC, and we know that winning a conference championship is possible.”

Sandmire has led her Broncos to five conference titles in the past 10 years, and she will try to make it six, March 31, at Cedar City, Utah.
