Broncos Tie School Record, Claim WAC Regular Season Title
SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Boise State's gymnastics team had a historic day on Sunday (March 13) when they earned their second-straight Western Athletic Conference regular season title and tied the Boise State school record of 197.050 at the Sacramento State triangular. The Broncos tied the school's best score, defeating Sacramento State (195.075) and UC Davis (194.175) at Sacramento State's Hornets Nest. Boise state improves to 12-3 and 5-0 in WAC matches, helping to win the regular season title.
Boise State swept all four events as a team, scoring season-bests as a team on all four events, as well as sweeping all individual events. They earned the school's second-best team score on vault (49.375) and tied for seventh-best team bars score (49.250). The Broncos also earned the seventh-best team floor score (49.450) in school history, while also scoring a 48.975 to win the team bars title.
Individually, Amy Glass and Hannah Redmon ran the show, each tying for the all-around win with scores of 39.50. Glass tied her career-best all-around score, while Redmon improved her career-best score in her first all-around competition of the season. Glass also captured the beam title, while Redmon won on bars. Hailey Gaspar won her fourth vault title this season and Kelsey Black captured her first career win, capturing the floor title.
"This team knows no limits," said co-head coach Tina Bird. "They were on fire today and I could not be more proud."
The Broncos started their 2011 regular-season finale on bars Sunday, sweeping the top-three spots. Redmon captured the title with a 9.925, while Glass placed second with a 9.90. With the win, Redmon earned her fifth bars with this season and 11th career bars win. Redmon now ties for No. 5 in season bars wins at Boise State, as well as sitting at No. 6 for career wins. Brittany Potvin-Green tied for third with Sacramento State's Amanda Blauvelt with 9.850 scores. Lindsay Kazandjian tied for fifth with a 9.825, while Katie Tuller placed 11th (9.750) and Black placed 12th (9.725), respectively.
Moving on to beam in the second rotation Glass earned her seventh title on the event this season and ninth career beam win. She improves her school record of season wins on beam while also taking nover the No. 4 spot in career wins. Glass shared the event win with Sacramento State's Lissa Zamolo, scoring 9.850 each. Bekah Gher earned a 9.80 to place third on beam, while Kazandjian, Redmon and Kelsey Lang each scored 9.775 to finish in a tie for fourth-place. Redmon recorded a career-high with her 9.775 score. Lacee Lang rounded out the Bronco line-up with a 9.725 score and tie for eighth place.
On floor, Boise State was also dominant earning the top-four places. Black smashed her career-best score earning a 9.925 to win her first career title. Gaspar, Glass and Redmon each captured 9.90 scores, a career-best for Gaspar, tying for second-place. Kelsey Lang earned a 9.825 to place eighth, while Sarah Smith earned a season-best score of 9.80 to tie for ninth-place.
Rounding out the competition on vault, the Broncos had a near-perfect top-six sweep. Gaspar led the team with her fourth win on vault this season and fifth career win on vault. She now ties for No. 10 in season vault wins at Boise State. Redmon placed second on vault with a 9.90, while Amanda Otuafi recorded a career-best of 9.875 to capture a third-place finish. Glass earned a 9.850, tying for fourth, while Black and Potvin-Green each scored 9.825 to tie for sixth-place.
In the all-around, Glass tied her career-best of 39.50, while Redmon set a new career-best of 39.50 to share the title. UC Davis' Marcy Miller placed third with a 39.00 score.
"Our freshmen are picking up the legacy started by this 2011 senior class and we are unstoppable," said assistant coach Patty Resnick.
The Broncos earned an outright win of the regular season title Sunday and will be aiming to reclaim the WAC Championship Meet title next week in San Jose, Calif. Boise State was the first WAC team to earn a regular season title with the award beginning in 2010. The team has also earned WAC Championship Meet titles in 2008 and 2009.
The WAC Championships will be hosted by San Jose State in Spartan Gym on Sat., March 19. The meet, which also includes Boise State, Southern Utah, Cal State Fullerton, Utah State and Sacramento State, is slated for an 8 p.m. (Mountain) start.
