Bronco Gymnastics Sets School Record on Vault, Ties Ninth-Best Team Score in Boise State History

BOISE, Idaho The No. 23-ranked Boise State gymnastics team went out with a bang in their final home meet of the season on Saturday night at Taco Bell Arena. The Broncos played host to Western Athletic Conference rival, No. 31-ranked Southern Utah University, posting their best score of the season to defeat the Thunderbirds. The Broncos’ team total of 196.225 not only earned them their 15th win of the season, but tied for the ninth best team score in Boise State history. Southern Utah posted a solid score of 195.225, their third-best mark of the season.

Four seniors finished their home and regular season careers, including Amber Neroes, Shaniece Craft, Ashli Rainboth and Courtney Achter. When they arrived on the Boise State campus four years ago they had set goals to become conference champions, a top-25 team, and national contenders. They have set those goals and more and have reached most.

“Our seniors set a new standard for Boise State gymnastics when they got here four years ago,” said co-head coach Tina Bird. “Each one of them has contributed in so many ways to this team and they can all leave knowing they have had amazing accomplishments. We are really going to miss them.”

Also setting standards for themselves, the entire Bronco squad stepped up for their final meet in front of their home crowd. Right off the bat, the Broncos notched a score of 49.325 on vault as a team to set a Boise State school record on the event. The team continued their energy throughout the meet, posting their third-best score of the season on bars (48.850). They also earned their second-best mark of the season on beam (48.875) and tied their second-best mark of the season on floor (48.175). Their overall Regional Qualifying Score improved by .405 after this meet, hitting a 195.215, which would have ranked them No. 19 in this last week’s national rankings.

On vault, sophomore Hannah Redmon led the squad, earning her ninth career win on the event and posting a career-best mark of 9.950. Her victory moved her into the sole possession of fifth-place on the career vault wins chart while she also tied for No. 4 in all-time best scores at Boise State on vault. Redshirt freshman Chelsee Apple was nearly as impressive, earning her second 9.90 score of the season, tying her career-best she set on Feb. 6, and placing fourth overall in Saturday night’s meet. Apple’s score of 9.90 marked the 17th time a Bronco has earned that score and ties her for No. 11 in all-time best scores on vault. Senior Shaniece Craft also had a stellar performance, posting a 9.875 to tie for fifth place. Senior Amber Neroes placed seventh with a 9.825 while junior Ruthie Pennington posted a 9.775 to tie for eighth. Junior Raquel Turnbow earned a 9.050 to place 11th in the meet.

“Our vault squad just keeps getting better and better,” said Bird. “We keep stepping it up each and every meet.”

The uneven bars was also a successful event for the Broncos with Redmon earning her first career win with a season-best mark of 9.850. Redshirt junior Taylor Jacob tied for second place with her 9.825 score. Sophomore Mallory Dziawura captured a fourth-place finish with a 9.775 while Neroes earned a 9.725 for a sixth-place finish. Redshirt sophomore Katie Tuller hit a 9.675 to place eighth while senior Ashli Rainboth placed 10th with a score of 9.575.

The balance beam was the only event the Broncos were not able to win, aside from the all-around. Southern Utah’s Elise Wheeler captured the title with a 9.875, leading to her win in the all-around with a 39.525 score. The Broncos’ Dziawura had a career-best night on beam to earn a 9.825 score and finish in a four-way tie for second. Freshman Lindsay Kazandjian was also a part of the second-place tie, finishing just off her career-best on the event. Jacob posted a 9.80 on beam to place sixth while sophomore Kelsey Lang earned a 9.750 to place seventh. Neroes scored a 9.675 to finish in 10th while freshman Cristy Dahlquist earned a career-high of 9.650 to place 11th overall.

Knowing they were on pace to a season-high score, the Broncos entered the floor exercise with excitement and vigor. Redmon snagged her third win of the night, marking her eighth career win on floor, tying her career-best mark of 9.925. Her eighth win moves her into sole possession of the No. 6 all-time career wins spot on floor at Boise State. Kazandjian posted a career-high mark of 9.850 to tie for third with teammate Kelsey Lang. Junior Yvette Leizorek had a beautiful performance and posted a 9.80 to finish in seventh while freshman Fiona Leslie and sophomore Sarah Smith tied for eighth with a score of 9.750.

With a school record as a team on vault, three excellent team scores on bars, beam and floor the Broncos went out on a very high note for their final regular season meet. The team also produced sixth individual career-best marks and one season-best en route to the ninth-best team total in Boise State history.

“It was a near-perfect night for our senior night,” exclaimed Bird.

The Broncos will prepare for the 2009 WAC Championships this coming week. The championships will be hosted by Sacramento State on Mar. 21 at the Hornet’s Nest in Sacramento. The meet is slated for a 6 p.m. start (Pacific Time) and will include the six WAC teams: Boise State, Sacramento State, Southern Utah, Cal State Fullerton, Utah State and San Jose State.
