Broncos Fall to Nation's Top Team

BOISE, Idaho For the first time in Boise State University history, the nation’s top-ranked gymnastics team competed at the Taco Bell Arena, Sunday, and it was the No. 1 team that left with the win, as the University of Florida posted a 197.250-191.275 dual victory over the Broncos.

The Gators, ranked No. 1 by GymInfo and the nation’s only undefeated team, improved to 13-0-1 on the season, while the Broncos fell to 6-10.

“To have the No. 1 team in the country in Boise was exciting,” head coach Sam Sandmire said. “They have amazing athletes on their team. We try to schedule the best competition that we can, and on a given year we might have given them a run for their money. We have just had some challenges this year that have been difficult to overcome.”

Although they only competed five individuals the Broncos got off to a great start on vault, posting a 48.825, their third-highest score of the season. Senior Kristin Aldrich and freshman DeAvera Todd each finished tied for second with a 9.850. The mark was a career high for Aldrich. Also setting a career high was freshman Ruthie Pennington, who scored a 9.800.

Vault would prove to be the Broncos’ best event against the Gators, however, as Florida went on to sweep the top six spots each on bars, beam and floor.

Boise State was led on bars by freshman Yvette Leizorek and junior Katie Griffis, who each scored a 9.675. Freshman Katelyn O'Donnell posted the squad’s top beam score with a mark of 9.725. On floor, Aldrich notched a 9.750 to lead the team.

Freshman Raquel Turnbow competed on floor for the first time in her career, scoring a 9.350. On beam, sophomore Britany Dean tallied a career high with a 9.550.

The Broncos travel to Cedar City, Utah, the site of the 2007 Western Athletic Conference Gymnastics Championships, for a dual meet with Southern Utah University, Friday, before closing out their regular season March 23, against Utah State University at the Taco Bell Arena.
