Gymnastics Earns 14th-Best Team Score in Boise State History, Smith Ties Boise State School Record on Floor

BOISE, Idaho The No. 29-ranked Boise State gymnastics team showed why they love a home crowd Friday night at Taco Bell Arena, posting a new season-high score of 195.925 in front of a season-high crowd of 1,148. The score marked the 14th-best team score in Boise State history and earned the Broncos an overwhelming win over their competitors, Brigham Young University and Cal State Fullerton. The Titans of Cal State Fullerton finished in second with a 193.825 while the Cougars of BYU finished with a score of 190.625.

“It was great to compete at home again,” exclaimed co-head coach Tina Bird. “We love the energy we get from our home crowd.”

Boise State improves to 14-4 on the season and 7-1 against Western Athletic Conference opponents. The Broncos also better their all-time series with CSUF to a 27-18 record while narrowing BYU’s series lead to a 34-8 record.

Overall the Broncos won each event as a team as well as winning individual titles in four of the five possible categories.

The Broncos had a special addition to Friday night’s meet with sophomore teammate Amy Glass in attendance. Glass suffered a season-ending neck injury earlier in the season and returned to Boise for the Broncos’ parents’ night meet.

Glass’ teammates fed off the energy of her attendance by tying their second-best team score on vault in their first rotation of the night. The Broncos scored a 48.950 to tie their team score on the event from their Feb. 27 meet at Sacramento State. Boise State senior Shaniece Craft led the way, scoring a 9.875 and snagging a first-place finish. Redshirt freshman Chelsee Apple finished just behind with a 9.850 and a second-place finish while junior Ruthie Pennington earned a 9.775, just .025 off her season-best to place fifth overall. Sophomore Hannah Redmon finished fourth amongst the Broncos with a 9.750 and sixth overall, while freshman Lindsay Kazandjian scored a 9.700, just .025 off her season-best to place eighth. Sophomore Kelsey Lang rounded out the Bronco lineup with a 9.675 performance, good for a ninth-place tie.

The Broncos continued to carry their energy over to the uneven bars where they recorded a season-high on the event of 49.050, surpassing their previous team-best by .175. The Broncos recorded two career-bests as well as one season-best in their second rotation of the night with Amber Neroes leading the way. The senior shattered her career-best by .050, scoring a 9.850 in her first bars competition of the season and winning the event. Following closely behind were redshirt sophomore Katie Tuller, redshirt junior Taylor Jacob and Redmon, all scoring a 9.825 and finishing in a three-way tie for second place. Tuller crushed her career-best as well, bettering her career mark by .050 while Redmon recorded a season-best mark, bettering her mark by .025. Sophomore Mallory Dziawura earned a 9.725 to place eighth on bars while Kazandjian posted an 8.00 finishing in 17th on the event.

On balance beam, Boise State continued their stone-solid meet, earning their second-highest score of the season on the event with a 48.750. Lang led the Broncos with an outstanding routine, surpassing her career-best by .750 with a 9.90 score to place first overall. Kazandjian finished second overall, posting a 9.775, while Dziawura was just behind with a 9.750 and a third-place finish. Neroes recorded a season-best score of 9.725, snagging the fourth-place spot while Jacob scored a 9.600, good for a tenth-place tie. Freshman Fiona Leslie rounded out the pack with a 9.350 to finish 14th.

“Our success tonight was largely due to the step-up performances from Amber Neroes and Kelsey Lang on bars and beam,” said Bird.

Finishing on the highest note of the night, sophomore Sarah Smith led the Broncos to tie their second-best season team score of 49.175. Smith bettered her career-best on floor by .050, scoring a meet-high mark of 9.950 to win the event and jump into the Boise State record books, tying for the No. 1 spot in Boise State all-time top floor scores and sharing a piece of the Boise State school record. Lang finished in second with her 9.875 performance while Redmon tied her season-best of 9.850 to place third overall. Kazandjian tied for fifth place with a 9.775 while Leslie posted a 9.725 to place ninth. Junior Yvette Leizorek rounded out the Broncos’ efforts with a 9.675, finishing in a four-way tie for 11th.

“Sarah Smith has been destined for this floor performance all season,” said Bird. “It was great to see her set a personal best tonight.”

Cal State Fullerton’s Alaina Baker was the only other event winner on the night, winning the all-around competition with a 38.975 score. Boise State’s only all-around competitor was Kazandjian, who placed fourth with a 37.250 effort.

The Broncos continue their home stand next Saturday in their third and final home meet of the season. Boise State will host Western Athletic Conference foe, Southern Utah, in a 7 p.m. meet on Sat., Mar. 14 at Taco Bell Arena. The meet will mark senior night for four Boise State seniors: Courtney Achter, Shaniece Craft, Amber Neroes and Ashli Rainboth.
