Broncos Finish Third at Home Meet

BOISE, Idaho Although freshman DeAvera Todd posted a third place finish in the all-around, Friday, at a quadrangular meet at the Taco Bell Arena, the Boise State University gymnastics team finished in third place with a score of 192.350.

With the team score the Broncos were able to knock off Seattle Pacific University (192.050), but they fell to No. 11 Oregon State University (196.475) and UC Davis (192.775) to drop to 6-9 this season. Boise State has not lost to Seattle Pacific since Jan. 25, 1992.

“We still need to put four events together with all hits in order to put ourselves in position to qualify to regionals,” head coach Sam Sandmire said. “We have done well on vault all season, and I am excited about our improvement on beam. But we had to count a couple of falls on bars and a fall on floor. That hurts, but I think we are headed in the right direction.”

With an all-around score of 38.800, Todd finished third among the 10 individuals competing in all four events. Only the Beavers’ Jami Lanz (39.575) and Tasha Smith (39.075) recorded higher all-around scores.

The Broncos started the evening on vault, and posted their second-highest total of the season with a 48.875. Led by Todd’s 9.850 and defending Western Athletic Conference vault champion Shaniece Craft’s 9.825, the Broncos were in second place after the first rotation.

In the second rotation Todd finished tied for third on bars with a career-high 9.850, and freshman Katie Tuller posted a career high of her own with a 9.775, but the Broncos fell to third place with a team score of 47.450.

Senior Kristin Aldrich (9.825) and junior Katie Griffis (9.775) led the Broncos’ charge on beam, helping the team to a score of 48.525, but Boise State was unable to overtake the Aggies for second place. With a team score of 47.500 on floor, the Broncos would remain in third place at the four-team meet. Freshman Yvette Leizorek notched Boise State’s top score on the event with a 9.775.

Boise State will continue its season March 11, hosting the nation’s top team, the University of Florida, in a dual meet at 2:00 p.m. at the Taco Bell Arena.
