No. 10 Broncos to Host Pink Meet

No. 10 Boise State (7-4, 3-0 MRGC) will return to Taco Bell Arena after a month-long absence from Boise and take on No. 22 Utah State (7-7, 2-2 MRGC) on Thursday, March 2 at 7 p.m. The meet will be the team’s annual Pink Meet in an effort to promote cancer awareness.

PINK MEET DETAILS: Boise State fans who wear pink will receive discounted admission of $3. Cancer survivors will also be recognized with pink flowers at the march-in portion of introductions.

There also will be a face painting booth and a post-meet autograph session where all fans are invited to meet the gymnasts in lobby three and receive autographs on supplied posters.

SCOUTING THE AGGIES: No. 22 Utah State’s strongest event has been floor thus far this season, sporting an event average of 48.881 with Elle Golison (9.822 avg.) and Madison Ward (9.872 avg.) leading the way. The Aggies have also excelled on vault (48.789 avg.) and uneven bars (48.836 avg.) as a team.

Katie Brown (9.778 avg.) has been tops on vault while Bailey McIntire (9.775 uneven bars avg.) has been superb not only on bars, but also as the team’s lone all-arounder with a 38.933 average.

SERIES HISTORY: The Broncos squared off against the Aggies two weeks ago on Feb. 17 and came away with the 196.700 – 196.300 road victory in Logan. Boise State has won the last 14 meetings but Utah State holds a 55-40 advantage in the all-time series.

LAST TIME OUT: Boise State pushed Alabama all night last Friday in Tuscaloosa, but the Broncos came up just short and fell to the Crimson Tide 196.925 - 196.675. On a night where the Broncos hit 100 percent of their routines, the success was encapsulated by juniors Alex Esmerian and Abby Webb – both of which were competing in just the second meet of their careers.

Esmerian won the balance beam title with a 9.925 and Webb was tops on floor for Boise State with a 9.875. Mackenzie Bennion shared the uneven bars title with a 9.875. Shani Remme -- competing as the lone all-arounder -- won the AA with a 39.375. The Blue and Orange ended the night on balance beam and posted their highest score of the season on the apparatus, a 49.300. The 49.300 is tied for the sixth-highest beam score in school history.

BACK TO THE TOP 10: The Road To Nationals team rankings for week eight of the 2017 season were announced Monday morning, and Boise State improved two spots and returned to the top 10 at No. 10. The Broncos’ RQS was boosted to 196.605 after posting the 196.675 at Alabama.

Boise State has been ranked in the top 10 in three of the eight weekly polls so far this season. The Blue and Orange climbed to as high as No. 7 on Feb. 13. No. 10 Boise State is just one of two schools not from a Power Five Conference to make this week’s top 10.

MRGC HONORS: Boise State had three gymnasts earn weekly MRGC honors this week with Esmerian leading the way after earning a 9.925 to win on balance beam last Friday night, giving her Balance Beam Specialist of the Week honors. Also claiming weekly accolades were Remme and Courtney McGregor. Remme was named the conference’s Gymnast of the Week after recording a 39.375 in the all-around to claim the AA title against the Crimson Tide. McGregor – who had only previously earned Uneven Bars and Gymnast of the Week honors – came up big on vault and was able to tally a 9.875 and earn Vault Co-Specialist of the Week.
