Broncos' Perfect Home Season Spoiled by Southern Utah in BSU Triangular

BOISE, Idaho The No. 21 Boise State women’s gymnastics team played host to Western Athletic Conference opponent Southern Utah University and West Region opponent Seattle Pacific University on Friday evening at BSU’s Taco Bell Arena. The Broncos (8-2, 6-2 WAC) split the competition, winning over Seattle Pacific but falling by .225 to Southern Utah. The SUU Thunderbirds are the only team to have handed BSU losses this season.

Boise State and Southern Utah were out to battle for the top spot in the WAC rankings after BSU took the lead in the February 25 rankings with a Regional Qualifying Score of 194.230. The Thunderbirds had an RQS of 194.005 coming into this weekend’s competition.

The Broncos placed second over all with a 194.475, their third highest total of the season. Southern Utah posted a 194.700 to edge out the Broncos, while the Falcons of SPU scored a 186.825 team total.

In the first rotation SUU had the early lead scoring 48.925 on bars to top BSU’s 48.875 on vault while Seattle Pacific totaled 45.10 on beam. The second rotation put the Broncos in the lead after scoring a 48.825 on bars. The Thunderbirds scored a 48.525 on beam to slide .250 behind the Broncos while SPU scored a 46.950 on floor. The SUU Thunderbirds launched into the lead in the third rotation scoring a 48.70 on floor while the Broncos struggled a bit on beam scoring 47.90. Seattle Pacific continued to hold the third place spot after a 46.950 performance on vault. In the fourth and final rotation, the Broncos attempted a comeback earning a 48.875 on floor while SUU posted a 48.550 on vault, but the Bronco effort was not enough to earn the team title.

The Broncos were able to win three of the four individual events, including vault, bars, and beam. Sweeping the top-3 spots on vault, freshman Hannah Redmon posted a 9.850 to win the event, while teammates Amy Glass and Shaniece Craft tied with a 9.80 on vault to place second. Redmon’s win marks her fifth this season and boosts her to No. 9 in BSU All-Time career vault wins as well as tying her for No. 6 in single season wins. Senior Lindsay Ward posted a season-best of 9.750 to tie for fifth while Amber Neroes tied for eighth with a score of 9.675. Sophomore Yvette Leizorek rounded out the Broncos’ line-up with a 9.650, good for tenth place. Elise Wheeler of SUU placed fourth on vault (9.775) while Shannon Coughlin tied for fifth (9.750) with BSU’s Ward.

On bars, Ward earned her fourth win of the season and tying her season best of 9.90 in the event. The win also ties her for No. 6 in the all-time single season records for the event, while also boosting her No. 1 career total to 16. Redmon tied her season-high on bars with a 9.875, good for a second place tie with SUU’s Wheeler. Leizorek tied with Seattle Pacific’s Brianna Schwartz for fourth, tying her career best with a score of 9.825. Neroes finished in a three-way tie with Erin Morgan of SUU and Ashley Domres of SPU, scoring a 9.80. Taylor Jacob finished in 13th (9.425) while Mallory Dziawura placed 16th (9.075) to round out the Broncos’ bars squad.

Earning her second win of the night, Ward snagged the beam title as well posting a 9.80 for the win. The victory marks Wards’ fourth of the season, tying her for No. 2 in all-time single season beam wins and moving her No. 1 total in career wins to 17. SUU’s Ariel Lamb, Shannon Coughlin and Katie Hicks placed second, third and fourth, respectively while BSU’s Jacob placed fifth with a 9.70. Glass and Kelsey Lang finished in a tie for ninth, scoring a 9.550 on beam. Redmon placed 12th with a score of 9.30 while junior Tessa Campbell made her debut on the season with a 9.075, good for 14th.

Floor exercise was the only event not won by the Broncos with SUU’s Wheeler stealing the title with a 9.850. BSU’s Leizorek and Lang shared the second place title with SUU’s Coughlin, scoring a 9.825 on the night. BSU’s Jacob placed fifth with a 9.80 while Sarah Smith tied with SUU’s Jenna Vogt for sixth with a 9.750. Redmon finished an uncharacteristic ninth on floor, scoring a 9.675 while Amy Glass tied for tenth with a 9.650.

In the all-around competition, SUU’s Wheeler won by .400 over BSU’s Redmon. Wheeler scored a 39.10 while Redmon posted a 38.70. SUU’s Vogt placed third with a 38.60 while SPU’s Ashley Domres took fourth with a 36.225.

The Broncos will now look towards their next competition on the road in Tempe, Arizona where they will face tough opponents No. 17 Arizona State and No. 20 Penn State. The meet is scheduled for 7 p.m. on Friday, March 7 and will be one of three regular season meets remaining for the Broncos. BSU will return home for one regular season meet on Friday, March 21 and will host the Western Athletic Conference Championships on Saturday, March 29.
