Bronco Gymnasts Win Beauty and the Beast Meet

BOISE, Idaho The Boise State University gymnastics team knocked off Southern Utah University in a season-best effort, Friday, at the fifth annual “Beauty and the Beast” meet at the Taco Bell Arena.

The Broncos posted a season-high team score of 193.200, knocking off the Thunderbirds (192.975) to improve their season record to 2-7 overall and 1-5 in the Western Athletic Conference.

“Beauty and the Beast is always fun, and this was by far our best meet of the season,” head coach Sam Sandmire said. “I think this meet was a turning point for us. We have now hit on every single event; it’s just a matter of hitting all four events on the same night.”

Sophomore Shaniece Craft got the Broncos started on vault, posting a season-high 9.825 to capture her first vault victory since winning the WAC title at last year’s conference meet. Freshman DeAvera Todd finished second on vault with a 9.800, extending her streak of finishing in the top three to seven meets.

Todd and junior Katie Griffis finished tied for first on bars, each posting scores of 9.800. The win on bars was the second of the season for Griffis, and the first of Todd’s young career. Despite taking the top two spots on bars, the Broncos relinquished the lead after the second rotation.

Boise State would regain the lead on beam, however, posting its highest score of the season in the event. Led by senior Kristin Aldrich’s career-high-tying 9.900, the Broncos posted a 48.875, regaining a lead that they would not give up for the rest of the evening.

Freshman Yvette Leizorek closed out the evening by recording her second floor title of the season with a 9.850, helping Boise State claim its second win of the year.

“We have six meets left, and we count six towards our regional qualifying score (RQS),” Sandmire said. “It is now go-time, so we are going to have to hit more consistently to get to the regional championships.”

The Broncos return to action, Feb. 17, when they travel to Denton, Texas, for a triangular meet with Texas Women’s University and the University of Illinois-Chicago.
