Bronco Gymnasts Complete Road Trip

PROVO, Utah The Boise State University gymnastics team completed a four-meet road tip, Saturday, falling at No. 22 Brigham Young University 193.725-191.100 at the Smith Fieldhouse.

Though the Broncos have yet to win a dual meet this season (1-7 overall, 0-5 Western Athletic Conference), their young talent is starting to shine through. Freshman Yvette Leizorek posted top three efforts in each of her three events, finishing third on vault (9.750), tying for third on bars (9.700) and tying for second on floor with a career-high 9.800.

“Yvette was definitely our star of the day,” head coach Sam Sandmire said. “She had her best vault of the season and her floor routine was just gorgeous.”

Although the Cougars grabbed the lead after the first rotation and held it for the entirety of the meet, Boise State did post its highest floor score of the season (48.275), and continued to hit on vault (48.500).

“We had a great showing on floor, probably our best performance of the year,” Sandmire said. “We counted all hits on floor and vault, but we are still counting falls on beam and bars. We are a young team, but all of our girls are starting to improve, so that will change soon enough.”

Seniors Tara Oberg and Kristin Aldrich finished tied for second on beam (9.725), and freshman DeAvera Todd finished second on vault with a score of 9.800.

The Broncos return to the Taco Bell Arena, Feb. 9, to host Southern Utah in their annual “Beauty and the Beast” meet with the Boise State wrestling team.
