Gymnasts Drop Meet at Utah State

LOGAN, Utah Four gymnasts claimed the top spot in their respective events in a dual meet at Utah State, Thursday, but the Broncos were unable to knock off the Aggies at the Dee Glen Smith Spectrum.

Although the Broncos were able to improve on their team total for the fourth consecutive meet, they were defeated 193.725-191.650 to fall to 1-5 overall and 0-5 in the Western Athletic Conference.

“We are still waiting to put four events together,” Head Coach Sam Sandmire said. “Once we do that we have the potential to score really well. A lot of our gymnasts are starting to come around.”

One such gymnast starting to make some noise is Ruthie Pennington. The freshman vault and floor specialist posted her first career win as a Bronco, winning on floor with her highest score of the season (9.850).

“Ruthie has continued to improve since she got here,” Sandmire said. “She performed outstanding on floor and she also did well on vault (9.725). I am very proud of her.”

For the first time this season Boise State boasted an individual victory on beam. Senior Kristin Aldrich and junior Katie Griffis tied for first with a 9.850, season highs for both individuals. Senior Tara Oberg took third place with a 9.700, tying her season high and completing a sweep of the top three places in the event.

Freshman DeAvera Todd followed up her vault score of 9.950 at Sacramento State last week with a 9.850, claiming her fourth title in five meets this season.

“DeAvera has such big air in her routines that she is really hard to beat,” head coach Sam Sandmire said. “She absolutely vaults out of this solar system.”

The Broncos complete their road trip at Brigham Young University, Saturday at 12:00 p.m., before returning home to host Southern Utah in the annual “Beauty and the Beast” meet with the Boise State University wrestling team.
