Broncos Earn Comeback Win Over Utah State in Third Meet of Season

BOISE, Idaho In a thriller of a dual meet, the No. 25-ranked Boise State gymnastics team showed their mental strength on Friday night, earning a come-from-behind win over Utah State, 194.350-193.60 at Taco Bell Arena.

The Broncos (5-1, 2-0 WAC) led after the first two rotations; however, Utah State managed to earn a .550 lead after a solid floor performance and a shaky balance beam effort by the Broncos. For the Broncos to stand a chance at even catching the Aggies, their floor routines needed to be nearly flawless. Boise State was able to pull it off with four Broncos tying or surpassing their career-highs on floor while the two others recorded season-highs to earn back a 1.30 margin for the dual win.

“Our performances on floor tonight were phenomenal,” said co-head coach Tina Bird. “Our assistant coach Patty Resnick deserves credit for that. Not only is she one of the nation’s best choreographers, but she works tirelessly on all the little details that make up the difference like they did tonight.”

Overall the Broncos recorded 11 career-best marks as well as eight season-best efforts on the night. Their vault score of 48.90 was the best on the event this season as well as their 49.175 effort on floor. The Broncos produced mediocre scores on bars (48.30) and beam (47.975), but still managed to surpass their season team-high total by .450.

The Broncos were able to sweep wins on three of four events with Utah State picking up the all-around title and the balance beam win. For the third straight meet, freshman Chelsee Apple led the Broncos on vault with a career-best effort of 9.850 to tie with USU’s Heather Heinrich. Sophomore Kelsey Lang was the next-highest Bronco in the placings, taking fourth with a career-best of 9.80. Senior Shaniece Craft pulled out a season-best score of 9.775 to place fifth, while junior Ruthie Pennington hit a season-best of 9.750 for another season-best. Freshman Lindsay Kazandjian set a career-high on vault with a 9.725 to tie for seventh while junior Raquel Turnbow added another career-best for the Broncos with a 9.675 to tie for ninth.

On bars, redshirt junior Taylor Jacob stole the show, running away with a win and earning a .125 margin of victory over sophomore Mallory Dziawura who tied for second place. Jacob recorded her third bars win in as many meets and marked her 12th career win. She moves up one spot on the Boise State all-time career bars win list to a tie for fourth with Cherianne Calkins (1988-90). Jacob recorded a 9.90 on bars to tie her career-best effort and tie as the 41st Bronco to ever hit that score (the last was Lindsay Ward on Mar. 15, 2008). Dziawura tied for second-place with USU’s Jackie Dillon with a 9.775. Kazandjian recorded her second career-best of the night with a 9.725 effort to tie for fourth with teammate Katie Tuller who tied a season-best. Sophomore Hannah Redmon got to compete for the first time this season after an early-season injury, coming back on bars with a 9.175 to place 11th. Senior Ashli Rainboth rounded out the Broncos on bars with an 8.80 for 12th-place.

Jacob led the Broncos in her second-straight event, placing second behind the Aggie’s Nicole Simoneau on beam. Jacob earned a season-best score of 9.775. Kazandjian earned a fourth-place finish on beam with a 9.675 while sophomore Sarah Smith tied for sixth with a season-best of 9.625. Dziawura placed eighth on beam with a 9.525 while freshmen Fiona Leslie placed ninth with a 9.375 and Cristy Dahlquist in tenth with a 9.150.

In a stunning comeback effort, the Broncos had extraordinary performances on floor, sweeping the top six places and recording career-bests for the top-five finishers. Smith led the way, tying her career-high of 9.90 in the process. Lang was joined by junior Yvette Leizorek in a tie for second place both tying career-bests of 9.850. Kazandjian rounded out her first all-around competition as a Bronco with her third career-best of the night, 9.80, to finish fourth. Scoring a 9.775 and tying for fifth-place, Leslie and Pennington had a career-best and season-best performance, respectively.

Utah State’s Heinrich earned the all-around title with a score of 38.950. Boise State’s Kazandjian finished right on her heels in her first all-around competition with a 38.925. USU’s Rebecca Holliday and Lyndsie Boone rounded out the four all-around competitors for the night.

The Broncos prepare to hit the road again, readying themselves for the Chicago Style meet against the University of Illinois, Illinois-Chicago and Michigan State on Fri., Feb. 6 in Chicago, Ill.
