Bronco Gymnasts Fall to Hornets

SACRAMENTO, Calif. The Boise State University gymnastics team improved their total team score for the third consecutive meet, Sunday, at Sacramento State, but fell to the defending Western Athletic Conference champions 193.000-191.125 at the Hornet’s Nest.

“We did really well in three of the four events,” head coach Sam Sandmire said. “We are having to battle, but we are improving.”

Junior Katie Griffis got the Broncos (1-5, 0-4 WAC) started on bars in the first rotation, taking first with a 9.875. In the second rotation Boise State posted a season high 48.925 on vault, sweeping the top three scores to claim the dual lead.

Highlighting the Broncos’ vault rotation was freshman DeAvera Todd, who posted a season high 9.950, tying the fourth-best vault in Bronco history. Todd has finished first on vault in three of the Broncos’ four meets this season.

Despite the Broncos’ top finisher placing fourth on floor, Boise State still held the lead heading into the final rotation. The Hornets posted their top event score in the final rotation with a 48.850 on floor, while the Broncos’ posted their lowest event score, a 46.300 on beam, to give Sacramento State the victory.

The Broncos continue their season on the road next week when they travel to Utah for duals with Utah State (Feb. 1) and Brigham Young (Feb. 3).
