Broncos Win Big at Beauty and the Beast

BOISE, Idaho - Boise State's 10 th annual Beauty and the Beast competition went off without a hitch Friday (Jan. 20) night with both the Bronco gymnastics team and wrestling team picking up wins at Taco Bell Arena. The No. 17 Bronco women earned a 196.175-191.875 win over Sacramento State, while the men defeated North Dakota State 21-16 in front of a rowdy crowd of 2,845 fans.

"Our performance tonight was crowd driven," said co-head coach Neil Resnick. "The fans were great tonight and their support carried through to our performances."

Junior Brittany Potvin-Green was one Bronco who fed off the energy, recording two career-best scores, tying another and winning two events. The San Antonio, Texas, native began the night by tying her career-best on vault (9.875), winning the event. She then scored a solid 9.825 on the uneven bars to tie for third. Potvin-Green went on to compete on balance beam for the first time in her three years at Boise State, nailing a 9.80 routine and placing second. She closed out the night with a career-best 9.850 score on floor exercise, placing third and leading her to her first career all-around title (39.350).

Plenty of other Broncos mirrored Potvin-Green's night with 13 of their 24 routines tying or surpassing career-best marks.

Scoring a team total of 49.150 on vault, Potvin-Green led the Bronco troops on the event. Freshman Erica Oswalt set a new career-best with her 9.850 score, good for second place. Sophomore Amanda Otuafi and junior Hailey Gaspar closed out the sweep, tying for third (9.825). Freshman Ciera Perkins placed sixth with a career-best effort of 9.775, while Bekah Gher tied for ninth (9.70).

Dominating their second event of the night, the Broncos earned a 49.175 team score on the uneven bars. Senior Lindsay Kazandjian and freshman Kelsey Morris teamed for the top spot, scoring career-best marks of 9.850 each. Sophomore Kelsey Black, Perkins and Potvin-Green tied for third (9.825), while freshman Caitlin Mann had a career-best 9.70 to tie for seventh.

Balance beam was the only event where Sacramento State earned a win, with Kalliah McCartney picking up the title and a 9.825 score. The Broncos outscored the Hornets as a team, however, earning a 48.775 team total on the event and sweeping second through fifth place. Potvin-Green and Kazandjian tied for second-place (9.80), Gher placed fourth (9.775) and Gaspar and Morris shared the fifth-place spot (9.70).

In their final rotation the Broncos scored a 49.075 on floor, led by Otuafi who earned a career-best 9.90 to win the event. Potvin-Green placed third (9.850), while Perkins had a career-best effort of 9.825 to place fourth. Mann earned a career-best of 9.775, placing fifth, while Gaspar was sixth in the event (9.725).

Sacramento State earned team scores of 48.625 on vault, 48.150 on bars, 46.625 on beam and 48.475 on floor. McCartney earned the balance beam title as well as placing second in the all-around with a 39.025 score.

Boise State's team total of 196.175 tied for the 16th-best team total in school history and helped the Broncos improve to 2-0 this season.

Boise State's gymnastics team continues their season next Friday, Jan. 27, hitting the road for the first time this season. The Broncos will travel to Logan, Utah , to take on Utah State and Southern Utah in a 7:00 p.m. match-up.
