Freshmen Lead Broncos in Win Over Washington

BOISE, Idaho - The No. 14-ranked Boise State gymnastics team had a strong start to its 2012 season defeating No. 16 Washington at home, 194.40 to 193.425. The Broncos' team score was the second-best season-opening score in school history, as was their team uneven bars score of 49.075.

"We are happy with our score for being an opening meet and the mistakes we made tonight are easily in our control to fix," said co-head coach Tina Bird. "We are really proud of how the team did tonight, especially the freshmen."

The Broncos were counting on a young line-up with 16 of their 24 routines coming from underclassmen, including nine from freshmen only.

Freshman Ciera Perkins stepped up to the challenge, earning her first collegiate title on bars with a career-best score of 9.90. The Henderson, Nev., native also scored for the Broncos on vault and floor. Fellow classmates Kelsey Morris earned a third-place finish on bars and scored on beam, while Caitlin Mann placed third on floor.

"We had great individual performances and it was especially exciting to see a freshman like Ciera (Perkins) step up and win on bars in her first meet," said Tina Bird.

The Broncos opened up the meet with a 48.925 score on vault, led by sophomore Amanda Otuafi and junior Brittany Potvin-Green, each scoring a 9.825 to tie for second-place.
