Freshman Gymnast Amy Glass Earns WAC Specialist of the Week Honor

DENVER, Colo. Boise State gymnast Amy Glass has been named the Western Athletic Conference Specialist of the Week for the week of Jan. 7-13. Glass joins San Jose State’s Alise Blackwell who earned the title of WAC Gymnast of the Week.

Glass, a Vacaville, Calif. native (Will C. Wood HS) earns the first Specialist of the Week honor of the season. It is also the first honor for the freshman as well as the first conference award for the Broncos this season. Glass earned the award after finishing first on vault at BSU’s dual meet against Utah State on Friday, Jan. 11. She recorded a 9.825 mark in the win and earned the highest-scoring mark of the meet in any event. With her performance, Glass also landed a No. 33 (tied) spot in the NCAA national rankings in the event.

Blackwell, a junior from San Jose, Calif. (Archbishop Mitty HS) won two events and the all-around to lead San Jose State to a 191.505-189.825 victory over Cal State Fullerton last week. In her first meet of the season, Blackwell won the bars with a 9.800, the floor with a 9.850, and the all-around title with a score of 38.850. She also scored well in the vault and the beam.

Other Gymnast of the Week nominees included: Boise State’s Kelsey Lang was the top all-around point scorer for the Broncos, earning a first place finish on the floor exercise with a 9.800. Cal State Fullerton’s Alaina Baker won the all-around against pre-season favorite Sacramento State, scoring 38.200.

Other Specialist of the Week nominees included: Cal State Fullerton freshman Maddie Steinauer anchored the Titans’ lineup and posted a win on the vault in her collegiate debut at San Jose State, recording a score of 9.825. Utah State’s Nicole Simoneau took the uneven parallel bars title with a 9.800 at Boise State last week. San Jose State’s Kelli Fournier won the beam, scoring a 9.675 at last week’s dual meet against Cal State Fullerton.
