Broncos Open Season At Flips Invitational

RENO, Nev. At the inaugural Flips Invitational, the Boise State University gymnastics team dropped a close dual to CSU-Fullerton, Friday, at the Grand Sierra Resort.

The first meet of the season for both schools, the Titans escaped with a narrow 187.45-187.25 victory over the Broncos.

“You always learn a lot at the first meet,” head coach Sam Sandmire said. “We had a lot of gymnasts step up and do a great job. We made some mistakes, but the mistakes we made tonight are all fixable.”

In her first-ever event as a collegiate gymnast, freshman DeAvera Todd posted the evening’s top score on vault, a 9.775. The score was the highest for any individual competing in any event at the dual.

Freshmen Yvette Leizorek (9.675) and Ruthie Pennington (9.65), also competing in their inaugural college event, posted the event’s second- and third-best scores of the night on vault, respectively. As a team the Broncos posted a 48.175 on vault, the highest single-event team score at the Invitational.

“We vaulted well,” Sandmire said. “Everyone fought for their landings and DeAvera’s vault was huge.”

On bars, sophomore Taylor Jacob boasted the event’s highest score with a 9.75. Fellow sophomore Ashli Rainboth posted a 9.65, the dual’s second-highest score.

“I was very proud of how Katie Tuller (9.475) led us off on bars,” Sandmire said. “Taylor is always awesome, and we were excited that Ashli took second in her first meet back from an injury that kept her out of most of last season’s competition.”

Junior Katie Griffis led the Broncos with a 9.725 on beam, and freshman Katie O’Donnell scored a 9.675.

“Katie Griffis has a beautiful beam routine, as usual,” Sandmire said. “But it was neat to see Katie O’Donnell do so well on beam in her first college meet.”

On floor, Leizorek scored a 9.75, the top mark in the event amongst the two schools.

“Yvette really came through on floor,” Sandmire said. “She has long, beautiful lines, and she really sold her routine. Ruthie Pennington (9.525), another freshman, came through for us as well.”

Todd, the only all-around competitor at the dual, scored a 36.275 in the four events.

The Broncos continue their season when they host Brigham Young, Jan. 19, at Bronco Gym. The dual is sponsored by St. Luke’s, and all fans are encouraged to wear pink.
