Broncos Blast Past Aggies in Season Opener
BOISE, Idaho - Boise State’s gymnastics team came barreling out of the gates, Friday, in their opening meet of the 2008 season. The Broncos, under the guidance of first year co-head coaches, Neil Resnick and Tina Bird blew away
BSU ran away with a 192.625-187.925 victory over the USU, sealing the head coaching duo’s first win in the record books.
Not only did the Broncos record their 15th win in history over the Aggies, but they did it with the biggest margin of victory, a 4.700 margin. The Broncos' winning score was the highest opening-meet score for BSU since 2004 and the second highest opening meet score since 2000.
“I’m really proud of them,” exclaimed Bird. “They competed pretty much like we’ve been practicing with the exception of a few first meet jitters.”
In the dual, the Broncos earned team wins in all four events, including a 48.050-47.950 win on vault, a 48.625-46.950 win on bars, a 47.250-45.400 win on beam, and finishing off with their biggest win of 48.700-46.625 on floor exercise.
“Our floor team really did an exceptional job,” said Bird. “They met our goal of clean lines and tumbling and the scores showed it.”
Two freshmen led the way in their biggest single event win with Kelsey Lang and Hannah Redmon finishing in a tie for first with scores of 9.800. Sophomore Yvette Leizorek finished just behind in third with a 9.750 while Sarah Smith took fourth at 9.725 to finish out the Bronco’s scoring on floor.
In their second largest margin of victory in a single event, BSU placed second through sixth on the uneven bars. In a tie for second place, junior Amber Neroes and senior Lindsay Ward led the Broncos posting solid scores of 9.775. With that mark, Neroes improved her career best by a score of .600. Freshmen Morgan LaRoque, Amy Glass, and Redmon filled out the fourth through sixth place finishes.
“Junior Amber Neroes really showed some leadership during the meet and hit some great routines so we’re excited about what the future holds for her,” explained Bird.
On beam, the Broncos posted the top two finishes with redshirt sophomore Taylor Jacob leading the way with a 9.700 score. Proving she will be a big impact as a freshman, Lang snagged the second place spot with a 9.675 while LaRoque came in fifth with a 9.425.
In their closest event of the night, the Broncos posted the top three spots on vault with the help of a freshman and two juniors. Glass stole the show with a 9.825 to win the event, while Shaniece Craft and Neroes posted scores of 9.775 and 9.700, respectively.
“We’re going to continue with what we’ve been doing in practice and we’re going to build from here on out through the season,” said Bird. “This meet really exceeded my expectations, it was really fun!”
