Jan. 6, 2016

LOGAN, Utah – The No. 19 Boise State gymnastics team was picked to finish first in the 2016 Mountain Rim Gymnastics Conference preseason coaches’ poll for the second-consecutive year, the conference announced on Wednesday afternoon. The 2015 MRGC defending champions garnered eight points and two first-place votes in the poll.

Southern Utah – the No. 24 team in the NACGC/W Preseason National Coaches’ Poll – earned the No. 2 nod in the conference poll after earning one first-place vote and six points. BYU was slotted in third place after picking up five points and one first-place vote.

No. 34 Utah State was picked to finish fourth after notching five points. Denver was in the MRGC last year in the conference’s debut season, but has since moved to the Big 12 Conference.

The Broncos won the 2015 conference title after recording a 196.625 despite being tied for second place going into the final rotation at last year’s championships hosted by Denver. The Blue and Orange exploded for a 49.400 on the uneven bars and fought off Southern Utah (196.275) for the victory in the MRGC’s inaugural season.

This year the Broncos return five gymnasts who picked up six All-MRGC honors last season. Krystine Jacobsen notched two All-MRGC honors with a first-team nod on uneven bars and a second-team spot on balance beam. Maddie Krentz and Ann Stockwell both earned first-team honors on vault, Diana Mejia secured first-team honors on uneven bars and Sandra Collantes was a second-team selection on floor. Jacobsen’s career-best 9.95 on the uneven bars also earned her the victory in the event.

Boise State will kick off their season on the road in a tri-meet at UC Davis that will also feature Seattle Pacific on Jan. 15 at 8 p.m. The first meet in the Treasure Valley will be against BYU at the Gem State Invitational on Jan. 29 at 7 p.m. at CenturyLink Arena.
