Two Broncos Sit Among Top-Five After First Day of Bronco Fall Invitational

BOISE, Idaho It may have been a cold morning out at the par-72, 6,099-yard SpurWing Golf Club, but that did not stop the Boise State women’s golf team from burning up the charts as two Broncos sit among the top-five after the first round of competition at the 2008 Bronco Fall Invitational, Monday.

Leading the way for the Broncos was senior Mandi Hedberg and freshman Noelle Zavaleta, who each fired an even-72 to finish the day knotted in a four-way tie for second. Not to be overshadowed was junior Iris Ocariza as she shot a 77 (+5) to open the event and enters the final round in a tie for 20th.

As a team, the Broncos fired an impressive single-round score of 299 (+15) to finish the day in second place and sit just five-shots shy of the lead, which is currently held by Santa Clara.

Holding on tight to a spot among the top-25 is senior Lindsey Shean, who opened the day with a 78 (+6) and currently sits in a tie for 24th. Rounding out the contingent of scorers for the Broncos was freshman Katie Somers who carded a 79 (+7) and is tied for 30th.

Competing as an individual was junior Minhee Park fired a career-low 73 (+1) to finish the first round tied for sixth. Making her collegiate debut will competing as an individual was freshman Maria Santisteban, who shot an 81 (+9) to sit in a tie for 42nd, while teammate Michelle Gooding tallied an opening round score of 85 (+12) to finish the day in a tie for 59th.

While the Bronco Fall Invitational was originally scheduled to play 54-holes, due to a long frost delay this morning only one round was played today.  As a result the 2008 Bronco Fall Invitational will be a 36-hole tournament with the final 18 starting at approximately 9:30 a.m. Tuesday morning.
