Team sits in 17th-place after day one.
LAS CRUCUES, N.M. (10/12/2009) - Iris Ocariza carded a three-over 75 during the first round to lead Boise State on the first day of the Price’s Give ‘Em Five Intercollegiate in Las Cruces, N.M. The senior from Honolulu, Hawaii, is tied with 11 others for 14th following the first round of competition, six strokes behind a pack of three at the top of the leaderboard with three-under 69s. The Broncos as a team fired a 25-over 313 on Monday afternoon to finish the first day of three in 17th-place out of 18 teams.
The tournament is a three-round event being played over three days at New Mexico State University’s campus golf course. Following Ocariza for Boise State is sophomore Maria Santisteban who tallied a four-over 76 in her first competition of the year. The Tampico, Mexico, native finds herself in a 13-way tie for 26th after Monday’s session.
Minhee Park is third on the Bronco team turning in an eight-over 80 during the opening round Monday. She is trailed by sophomore Michelle Gooding at 10-over-par 82 and freshman Lori Harper who carded a 13-over 85.
The Broncos as a team struggled a bit against a solid field which includes three teams ranked in Golfweek’s top-50. Even though Boise State turned in its second-best round of the year this afternoon recording a total of 25-over 313, it still finds itself in 17th-place out of 18 teams. They will enter Tuesday morning’s second round 19 strokes out of first-place where the defending champion and 35th ranked UC Irvine Anteaters are located firing a six-over 294 today.
Boise State will look to move up the leaderboard tomorrow morning when they tee off at 8:30 a.m. (Mountain) paired with the University of Nevada and Mississippi State University. The Broncos are only 10 strokes out of fifth-place entering the second round.
