Women's Golf in Ninth after Day One at Price's Give`Em Five...
LAS CRUCES, N.M. (10/11/2010) - Hayley Young and Jenna Leurquin fired first-round scores of 2-over 74 during today’s opening session at New Mexico State University’s Price’s Give`Em Five Collegiate in Las Cruces. The duo is currently tied for 18th-place, nine strokes out of first. The Broncos as a whole recorded their second-best single round score of the fall with a 13-over 301 to finished the day in ninth-place out of 14 teams.
Leading the team competition is Baylor University who shot 3-under 285 on Monday. The Bears hold a one-stroke lead over UC Irvine who sits at 2-under 286. Boise State is in a pack of seven teams that are separated by seven strokes, fourth-place through 10th. The Broncos are six strokes out of fourth-place heading into Tuesday’s second round and 16 behind first-place Baylor.
Young and Leurquin are among a group of six tied for 18th after the first day. The 74 (+2) is Young’s second-best round of the fall semester to date. Meanwhile, it is Leurquin’s, a freshman from Brussels, Belgium, season-low total for a round.
At the top of the individual leaderboard is Baylor’s Jaclyn Jansen who carded a 7-under 65 this afternoon to cruise out to a four-stoke lead over a trio sitting in second place.
Lori Harper turned in a solid round as well on Monday tying her season best of 4-over 76. The sophomore from Manhattan Beach, Calif., is currently tied for 32nd out of 78 participants.
Right behind Harper sits Michelle Gooding who fired a 5-over 77 on the opening day in Las Cruces, N.M. The junior from Wilder, Idaho, is in an 11-way tie for 41st.
Rounding out the day for the Broncos was Katie Somers who recorded a 7-over 79 on the first 18 holes of the tournament.
Boise State will look to move up the standings during the second day of three at the Price’s Give`Em Five Collegiate. Tomorrow’s session will begin at 8:30 a.m. (Mountain) at the New Mexico State University Golf Course.
