Boise State Golf Finishes Seventh at Giustina Memorial Classic...

Bronco men place sixth while the women finish eighth.

CORVALLIS, Ore. (9/29/2009) - The Boise State University golf teams finished the final day of the third annual Giustina Memorial Classic in Corvallis, Ore., by firing a combined third-round score of 622 (+46) giving the Broncos a tournament total of 1,846 (+118) to place seventh out of ten schools at the event. This tournament is unique in college golf in that it features a combined competition for the men’s and women’s teams for an overall championship in addition to the two traditional titles. On the men’s side, the Broncos improved one position in the standings today to finish sixth, while the women slipped one spot to eighth. Leading Boise State at the competition was Blake Brown who finished tied for 14th in the men’s division with a one-over-par 217 and Iris Ocariza who placed tied for 22nd in the women’s bracket tallying a 237 (+21).

There was no movement in the combined competition first through 10th on Tuesday as the University of Oregon held onto the lead to claim the title with a 25-over 1,753 followed by the host Oregon State Beavers 20-strokes back with a 1,773 (+45).

The Boise State Women...
On the women’s side, Boise State entered the day in seventh-place three strokes ahead of Western Athletic Conference rival Hawaii. The Broncos completed the final round by shooting a 33-over 321 this afternoon giving them a grand total of 953 (+89). Unfortunately, the UH Rainbow Wahine fired a 317 (+29) to knock Boise State down to eighth-place by one stroke. The Oregon Ducks won the women’s division with a 896 (+32), while Washington State placed second with a 921 (+57).

Iris Ocariza carded a seven-over 79 today to finish the tournament with a Bronco best 237 (+21) to tie for 22nd. Oregon’s Kendra Little ran away with the competition tallying a three-round total of two-under-par 214, nine strokes better than second-place.

Rounding out the two-day competition for the Boise State women were sophomore Michelle Gooding who recorded a 10-over 82 this afternoon to finish with a 239 (+23) and in a three-way tie for 27th. She was followed by freshman Hayley Young who finished 30th after shooting a seven-over 79 today for a three-round total of 240 (+24). Jennifer Henningsson carded an 85 (+13) on the final 18 holes to place in a three-way tie for 37th with a 245 (+29), followed by classmate Lori Harper who shot a nine-over 81 this morning for a final total of 246 (+30) to tie for 40th.

The Boise State Men...
The Bronco men turned in a third-round total of 13-over 301 to match their second round total on Monday. Boise State finished the competition by rallying past the University of South Carolina-Upstate with a final tally of 893 (+29) to finish in sixth-place on the men’s side of the event. The Oregon State Beavers won their own tournament by nine strokes with a final score of 20-under 844.
Blake Brown continues to pace the Broncos in the early portion of the season recording the top all-around score for Boise State for the second time in two competitions.  The sophomore from Scottsdale, Ariz., carded a one-over 73 in today’s last round to end the two-day tournament in a four-way tie for 14th with a one-over 217. Washington State’s Trent Sanders held onto the lead he had following Monday’s two rounds to finish with a nine-under 207.

Robbie Richards recorded the second-best tournament total for the Broncos with a five-over 221 to finish in a three-way tie for 21st. The senior from Australia tallied a three-over 75 in today’s final round.  Bronco freshman Taeksoo Kim also fired a three-over 75 today to take sole possession of 33rd place with a 227 (+11). He was followed by senior John Baranco who finished in a three-way tie for 36th with a 230 (+14) after shooting a six-over 78 this afternoon. Rounding out the competition for Boise State was junior Chris Byrne who recorded an eight-over 80 on the final day for a tournament score of 235 (+19).
