Boise State's Golf Teams Head to Corvallis, Oregon, for the Giustina Memorial Classic...
► What’s Happening
Boise State University’s men’s and women’s golf teams are headed off to the Giustina Memorial Classic in Corvallis, Ore.  This tournament is one of the more unique collegiate golf events of the year that features three team competitions with a men’s, women’s and combined championship. The GMC is hosted by Oregon State University at Trysting Tree Golf Club in Corvallis. This competition is the second tournament of the year for both teams.

► Recently for the Broncos
The men have not seen action since the Palouse Collegiate Sept. 14-15 when they placed eighth out of 12 teams. They were led by sophomore Blake Brown who tied for the individual title with an eight-under-par 208.  The women saw competition this past week when they participated in the Inland Cup Sept. 21-23 where they placed 10th out of 13 teams. Iris Ocariza and Hayley Young led the Broncos with 240’s (+24) and tied for 29th. Both events were hosted by Washington State University at the Palouse Ridge Golf Club in Pullman, Wash.

► Last Year at the Giustina Memorial
Last year Boise State rallied on the final day of the Giustina Memorial Classic to move up one place finishing eighth in the combined standings with a tournament total of 1,833 (+105), Oregon State won the event with a 1,757 (+29). The Boise State men finished the three-round tournament with an 876 (+12) to tie with the University of Idaho for eighth place while Oregon State won the men’s competition by firing an 11-under-par 853. Then junior Robbie Richards turned in his top performance of the season when he tied for fourth place with a 54-hole score of three-under-par 213. The Bronco women finished the two-day tournament with a 54-hole total of 957 (+93) to place eighth overall, Oregon State won the women’s side by turning in a 904 (+40). Iris Ocariza, a junior last year, recorded the best score for the Boise State women in the tournament with a three-round total of 231 (+15) to place 11th overall.

► The Tournament Format
The format for this tournament calls for three rounds over two days. The first 36 holes will be played on Monday, Sept. 28, followed by the final round on Tuesday. The event is scheduled to begin on Monday with a shotgun start at 9:45 a.m. (Mountain), while Tuesday’s final round will have the teams start from the first and 10th tees beginning at 8:45 a.m. (Mountain).

► The Tournament Course

The Giustina Memorial Classic is being held at the Trysting Tree Golf Club in Corvallis, Ore.  For the purpose of this competition the club features a competition course that is a par-72 that spans 7,030 yards for the men  and 6,282 yards for the women.  Trysting Tree Golf Club was recently rated by Golf Digest as the 9th best public course in the State of Oregon. The Scottish links-style course is home of the Oregon State University golf teams. The course’s landscape uses mounds and swales to vary its flat Willamette River flood-plain location.

► The Tournament Field
The 2009 edition of the classic features the men’s and women’s teams from 10 NCAA Division I institutions. The participating schools for the tournament include: Boise State, Cal Poly, Hawai’i, Nevada, Oregon, Oregon State, Portland, South Carolina-Upstate, Washington State and Wyoming. Over 100 individuals will compete for the team and individual titles.

► Boise State’s Men’s Tournament Roster
The men’s lineup for the Giustina Memorial has a different look from the first competition. Sophomore Blake Brown will lead the Broncos starting in the number one position. He enters the week ranked 11th nationally by Golfstat after tallying a 208 last time out to average 69.3 strokes per round. Senior John Baranco (77.0 strokes per round) will start at the second position, followed by junior Chris Byrne (78.0 spr) at the three, freshman Taeksoo Kim at the fourth, and senior Robbie Richards (76.0 spr) at the five. Kim is the one change among the Bronco lineup this week competing in his first ever collegiate tournament.

► Boise State’s Women’s Tournament Roster

The Bronco women’s lineup for this week includes one change from last week. They will be led by freshman Hayley Young  (80 spr) at the first position, followed by senior Iris Ocariza (80 spr) at the number two, freshman Lori Harper (81.7 spr) in the third position, Jennifer Henningsson (84 spr) at the four, and Michelle Gooding at the five. While the first four all competed in last week’s Inland Cup in Pullman, Wash., Gooding is seeing her first tournament action of the young season.
