CORVALLIS, Ore. The Boise State men’s and women’s golf team combined scores to put them in ninth place after 36-holes of play at the 2008 Giustina Memorial Classic, held at the Trysting Tree Golf Club, Monday.

Leading the way for the Broncos was Robbie Richards, on the men’s side, and Iris Ocariza for the women. Richards started the day firing a 73 during the opening round, but improved his game after shooting a team-low 69 (-3) during the second round of competition to card 142 (-2) on the day to place him in a tie for 11th. Not to be overshadowed was Ocariza, as the junior also fired a team-low, 73 (+1), during the first round to complete the day knotted in a tie for 14th with a two-round score of 152 (+8).

Leaving a mark in the top-25 was redshirt senior Scott Loewen, who fired a 1-under par (71) during the opening round of competition, followed by a 73 (+2) to bring his day-one total to an even 144, which was good enough to tie for 22nd. Also making her presence known in the ranks was freshman Noelle Zavaleta as she shot two-round score of 155 (+11), earning her a spot among the top-25.

As a team, the men fired a 293 during the opening round, but knocked a stroke off their second-round score to bring their total to 585 (+9) and sit in ninth among the men’s teams. The women currently sit knotted in a tie for eighth with in-state rival, Idaho, after carding a two-round score of 629 (+53).  Combined, the Broncos currently sit in ninth, just seven shots behind the Vandals and 27 shy of breaking into the top five.

This tournament is unique in the fact that the men’s and women’s team scores are combined to give them an overall score used to determine placement.

Also competing for the men was Blake Brown, who shot a 145 (+1) on the day to sit in a tie for 28th. Teammate John Baranco currently rests in 49th, while Drew Surmeier rounds out the Bronco contingent at 50th.
