Young in Top 10, Harper in Top 25 in Season Opener
WORLEY, Idaho – Boise State junior women’s golfer Hayley Young is tied for eighth place after the opening rounds of play at the season-opening Circling Raven Collegiate Invitational Monday, and fellow junior Lori Harper is tied for 22nd.
Young posted first- and second-round scores of 76 (+4) and 75 (+3), respectively, en route to a 36-hole total of 151 (+7) at the par-72, 6,111-yard Circling Raven Golf Course. She is two strokes back of the top five.
A second-team all-conference performer last season, Young enters Tuesday’s final round looking for her fifth-career top-10 finish.
Harper posted a two-round total of 155 (+11; 75-80) in her first event of the season, and will be looking for a second-straight top-25 finish after tying for 11th at last year’s conference championship. Her opening-round 75 (+3) is tied for the second-lowest round of her career.
“We had three solid rounds in the morning,” Boise State head coach Nicole Harris Bird said. “We just needed a fourth and fifth, and we would be right in there.
“We struggled a bit in the afternoon – the wind got the best of us and we made too many bogeys. All the scores are pretty close though, so a strong final round will allow us to make up ground. That is our goal for Tuesday.”
The Broncos are tied for 13th place in the 22-school field after posting a two-round team score of 634 (+58). The Broncos, tied with Sacramento State and Northern Arizona, are just seven strokes back of the top 10.
Senior Katie Somers is just four strokes back of the top 25 with a 159 (+15, 77-82).
Rounding out the scoring for the Broncos were Michelle Gooding (88-82—170, +26) and Maria Santisteban (87-83—170, +26).
Tuesday’s final round will begin with a shotgun start at 8 a.m.
