Ocariza in Eighth Place After Two Rounds at WAC Championship?

RENO, Nevada (4/21/09) Iris Ocariza carded a 3-over 75 Tuesday afternoon to lead Boise State at the Western Athletic Conference Women’s Golf Championship. Even though the Broncos trimmed one stroke off their round-one team score recording a 18-over-par 306 during the second session, it was not enough to keep them in fifth place as Boise State slipped to sixth with a 613 (+37).  

San Jose State, the nation’s 21st ranked team, tallied a 1-over 289 today for a two-day total of 574 (-2) extending their advantage to a 17-stroke lead over second-place Fresno State at 591 (+15). Boise State currently sits three strokes back of fifth place New Mexico State (610, +34) and nine behind Nevada (604, +28) in fourth.

Ocariza continues to lead Boise State at the WAC Championship firing a 3-over 75 during the second session giving her a total of 149 (+5) which ties the junior for eighth-place with three others. She will enter tomorrow’s final round eight strokes out of first place. This afternoon Ocariza recorded one birdie and 13 pars this afternoon.

Noelle Zavaleta matched Ocariza’s second round mark with her own 3-over-par 75. The freshman from Lakewood, Calif., improved her first day total by two strokes but still remains tied for 15th place with a tournament total of 152 (+8).

Senior Lindsey Shean is currently third for Boise State on the leaderboard after carding a 7-over 79 this afternoon. That dropped her from 11th to a tie for 22nd with a total of 154 (+10).

Rounding out the Boise State roster on day two of the conference tournament  were senior Mandi Hedberg who shaved four strokes off her first round score to record a 5-over 77 during the second session today. While junior Minhee Park is currently fifth for the Broncos standing at 171 (+27) after two rounds.

Boise State will be matched with the University of Hawaii for the final round tomorrow. They will the first teams to tee off on the final day of the 2009 WAC Championship which is scheduled to begin at 8:30 a.m. (Mountain) at the Wolf Run Golf Club in Reno.
