Ocariza in four-way tie for third.

MESA, Ariz. (4/19/2010) - Boise State University’s Iris Ocariza fired a 3-over 74 in today’s opening round of the 2010 Club Glove Western Athletic Conference Women’s Golf Championship at Longbow Golf Club in Mesa, Ariz. The Broncos find themselves in the thick of a tight team competition carding a 311 (+27) through the first 18 holes to finish the day in fifth place out of seven teams. San Jose State, ranked No. 44th nationally by GolfStat, leads the tournament firing a 20-over 304. It is anyone’s tournament as eight strokes separate the top six teams after the opening day.

Ocariza matched her season-low round score today with a 74 as she finished the first day in a four-way tie for third-place. The senior from Honolulu, Hawaii, is two strokes behind current tournament leader Erika Lundberg of the University of Hawai’i who shot 1-over 72.

Freshman Hayley Young was three strokes back of Ocariza with a 6-over 77, good for a seven-way tie for ninth. Next for Boise State was freshman Jennifer Henningsson who shot an 8-over 79 today, followed by senior Minhee Park and freshman Lori Harper who each recorded 10-over 81s.

The WAC championship is a three stage tournament with one round played per day. The second session will take place Tuesday with the competition scheduled to begin by tee times at 7:30 a.m. (Mountain). Boise State will be paired up with instate-rival the University of Idaho for the second round and will begin teeing off at 8:10 a.m. tomorrow. The winning team of the WAC Golf Championship earns the league’s automatic bid into the NCAA Regionals in early May.
