Broncos Complete Round One of Canes and Cardinal Classic

Miami, Fla. - The sun may not have been shining in Miami, but Boise State’s Iris Ocariza was definitely a bright spot for the Broncos as she leads the women’s golf team after the first round of competition at the Canes and Cardinal Classic, Monday.

While the tournament was originally scheduled to play two rounds on the opening day, inclement weather lead to sub-par conditions on the course, postponing the second round of competition to Tuesday, with a shotgun start at 7:30 a.m.

Ocariza opened the tournament with a first round score of 74 (+2) after shooting an even 37 on both the front and back nine. The sophomore not only tied her season low, but currently sits in a tie for 18th. Following close behind is teammate Mandi Hedberg, who fired a 76 (+4) during the opening round of competition and is knotted in a tie for 34th.

Minhee Park may have struggled on the front nine, but quickly got on track as she improved her game by four strokes on the back end of the course to finish round one with an 80 (+8). Making her debut after missing last week’s tournament was Lindsey Shean who fired an 83 (+11) in the opening round, while teammate Nikki Olson shot an 84 (+12) to round out the contingent.

As a team, the Broncos are currently knotted in a tie for 13th with Florida International after tallying a score of 313 (+25).
