Boise State Drops Dual to New Mexico Sate
MESA, Ariz. (4/2/2011) - Boise State University’s women’s golf team lost its first dual of the season on Saturday afternoon when the Broncos fell to New Mexico State University 299 (+15) to 321 (+37) in Mesa, Ariz., at Longbow Golf Club. The Aggies claimed the first five places as they handed the Broncos a 22-stroke defeat. NMSU’s Suteera Chanachai took the individual medalist honors with a 1-over-par 72, Hayley Young was Boise State’s top finisher placing sixth overall with a 8-over 79. The Broncos were 2-0 in duals heading into the competition with victories over Idaho State and the College of Idaho.
The two teams used the match as a warm-up for this week’s Wyoming Cowgirl Classic at the picturesque Ocotillo Golf Resort in Chandler, Ariz., on Monday and Tuesday, April 4th and 5th. They also used Saturday’s dual at Longbow Golf Club as an opportunity to get familiar with the host course for next week’s Western Athletic Conference championship.
The young Bronco squad struggled a bit on Saturday against the Aggies. Boise State was led by Hayley Young who shot a 37 on the front nine followed by a 42 on the back nine giving her a final tally of 8-over 79 on the par-71 course.
Michelle Gooding recorded the second-best score of the day for the Broncos with a 9-over 80, carding a 39 on the first nine and a 41 on the final half. Gooding tied for seventh-place.
Rounding out the scoring for Boise State were Jenna Leurquin and Katie Somers who tied with 10-over 81’s, followed by Lori Harper at 12-over 83.
New Mexico State took the first five places led by Chanachai’s 1-over 72. Buz Bowerman-Ritchie finished three-strokes back in second-place with 4-over 75, followed by Demi Mak and Mieke Canan at 76 (+5) tied for third, Ashley Elias took fifth with a 77 (+6), rounding out the scoring for the Aggies was Apinporn Swashcuto who tied for seventh with a 9-over 80.
Boise State will be back in action this Monday and Tuesday when they participate in the Wyoming Cowgirl Classic in Chandler, Ariz.
