Broncos Struggle at Mountain View Collegiate?

TUCSON, Ariz. (3/29/09) Boise State’s women’s golf team participated this past weekend in the Mountain View Collegiate in Tucson, Ariz., which featured the strongest field that the Broncos had competed against this season. The blue and orange struggled during the two-day three-round event finishing 19th overall tallying a 78-over-par 942. The tournament hosted by the Big 12 Conference’s University of Colorado at Mountain View Country Club had 16 teams ranked in the top 80 nationally by Golfweek. The San Jose State Spartans, the highest ranked team in the competition at 17th, won the event carding a team score of two-over-par 866.     

Iris Ocariza recorded the top tournament score for the Broncos during the event finishing with a 13-over-par 229. The junior from Honolulu, Hawaii carded the lowest round for Boise State in the competition with an even-par 72 during Saturday’s afternoon session which was sandwich by a 78 (+6) in round one and a 79 (+7) in Sunday’s final 18. Ocariza’s 72 tied for her second lowest total of the campaign matching her total in the third round of the Inland Cup last September, her best was a 69 (-3) during the third round of the Heather Farr Invitational on September 30th.  

Freshman Noelle Zavaleta finished second among the Boise State five-member squad at the tournament with a 19-over-par 235. The Lakewood, Calif., native fired off a one-over-par 73 during the first round Saturday morning, but struggled during the final two rounds carding an 84 (+12) in round two followed by a 78 (+6) on Sunday.

Rounding out the competition for Boise State were senior Lindsey Shean with a 237 (+21) recording scores of 74-81-82; junior Minhee Park who turned in a 25-over-par 241 with individual round scores of 83-80-78; freshman Maria Santisteban wrapped up the Bronco scoring with a 255 (+39) carding scores of 86-84-85.

Next up for Boise State will be the prestigious Cardinal and Canes Classic in Miami, Fla., April 6-8. The competition is a three-round 54-hole tournament played over three days. The event is hosted by the University of Miami and the University of Louisville at the Don Shula Golf Club in Miami Lakes, Fla. The Classic will be the final regular season tournament for the women’s golf team who will then compete at the Western Athletic Conference championship in Reno, Nev., April 27-29.
