Zavaleta Rallies to Finish Seventh Leads Broncos to Eighth Place in Hawaii ?

Zavaleta records second top-10 finish this season.

KANE’OHE, Hawaii (3/18/09) On the final day of the Dr. Donnis Thompson Invitational at Kane’ohe, Hawaii, Noelle Zavaleta fired an even-par 72 Wednesday to lead her team to an eighth place finish out of 12 teams. Today’s score moved the freshman from Lakewood, Calif., up four spots to place seventh overall as she completed the three-day tournament with a seven-over-par 223, four strokes back of tournament champion Kayla Mortellaro from Idaho who won with a three-over-par 219. Zavaleta turned in her second top-10 finish of the 2008-09 campaign following a fourth place tie at the Bronco Fall Invitational last October.

Boise State entered the morning in eighth place, six strokes out of fifth place. The Broncos ended the competition by carding a 319 (+31) during today’s final round to hold on for the eighth place finish. The final tournament scores for Boise State were 306-314-319939 (+75), overall they finished 33 strokes behind team champion Texas A&M who tallied a 907 (+43).  

Senior Mandi Hedberg turned in the second-best tournament score for Boise State with a 235 (+19). The Twin Falls, Idaho, native shot a seven-over-par 79 today to go with Monday’s 79 and yesterday’s team-best 77 (+5).

Rounding out the day for Boise State was senior Lindsey Shean with an 11-over-par 83 giving her a final total of 243 (+27) to place tied for 41st. Juniors Iris Ocariza and Minhee Park finished in a three-way tie for 43rd with a tournament tally of 244 (+28) after recording third round scores of 85 and 86 respectively.   

Next up for Boise State is the MountainView Collegiate at Tucson, Ariz., March 28-29 hosted by Colorado State University and the University of Colorado.
