Boise State Finishes 18th in Hawaii

KANEOHE, Hawaii (3/15/2011) - Boise State University’s women’s golf team took 18th-place this week at the 26th annual Dr. Donnis Thompson Invitational in Hawaii. The Broncos tallied a 30-over 318 today giving them a three-round team score of 965 (+101). Freshman Jenna Leurquin led Boise State over the two-day tournament with a 18-over 234 to tie for 37th.

Arizona State University won the team title by 15 over the University of Arizona with a final score of 23-over 887. Boise State opened the 54-hole competition Monday morning with a 332 (+44) then followed that with its top round of the event that afternoon with a 315 (+27). Those were followed by today’s final round of 318. Team scores tended to be on the high side in Hawaii during this tournament with 11 teams recording final tallies of 77-over-par or more.

Meanwhile on the individual side of the competition, Carlota Ciganda from Arizona State took home the individual medalist honors with a 1-under-par 215, out pacing Arizona’s Alejandra Llaneza by one stroke at even-par 216.

Leading the Broncos was true freshman Jenna Leurquin who record scores of 80 (+8) on the first round Monday followed by her best round of 75 (+3) during yesterday’s second 18, finishing with a 7-over 79 this afternoon. Her final total was good for an eight-way tie for 37th.

Rounding out the scoring for Boise State was Lori Harper at 28-over 244 (86-80-78), Katie Somers at 34-over 250 (82-81-87) and Michelle Gooding who added a 36-over 252 (84-86-82). Sophomore Hayley Young competing in her first tournament of the spring had a slow start with a disqualification on the first round followed by two rounds of 7-over 79.

Boise State’s next tournament is a dual versus instate-rival Idaho State University on Wednesday, March 23, at BanBury Golf Club in Eagle, Idaho.
