Broncos Saddle Up For 2008 Kitahara Fresno State Invitational

What’s Happening - The Boise State University women’s golf team will open the spring portion of its schedule Feb. 25, at the 2008 Kitahara Fresno State Invitational in Fresno, Calif.

 

The 36-hole tournament will be held on the par 72, 6,004-yard Copper River Country Club. The first round of the tournament will take place Monday, Feb. 25, beginning at 9:30 a.m. The final round of the tournament will be held Feb. 26, begin at 8:00 a.m.

 

The Field - The 16-team field will feature five teams from the Western Athletic Conference. Boise State will be joined by conference foes Fresno State, Hawaii, Nevada and New Mexico State. The rest of the field will consist of Colorado State, Kansas, Long Beach State, San Francisco, Sac State, San Diego State, Santa Clara, Tulsa, UC Davis, UC Irvine, and Portland State.

 

The Broncos - The Broncos will enter the Kitahara Fresno State Invitational with the second-best ranking in the WAC, according to Golfstat.com. Boise State earned the No. 93 ranking based on its fall performances placing them ahead of Fresno State (No. 94), New Mexico State (No.99) and Nevada (No.115). Hawaii (No. 62) is the highest ranked team from the WAC in the tournament.

 

In five fall tournaments the Broncos posted three top 10 finishes. The team’s best finish came at the Bronco Fall Invitational with it posted a 989 (+125) to earn fourth place. Boise State also finished sixth at the Giustina Memorial Classic with a 922 (+58) and seventh at the USF-Richmond Country Club Invitational with a 927 (+75).

 

The Players - Nikki Olson, Iris Ocariza, Amanda Nave, Lindsey Shean and Mandi Hedberg will be representing Boise State in the tournament.

 

Senior Nikki Olson collected two seventh place finishes in the fall to match her career-best finish. She posted an 8-over 224 at the Giustina Memorial Classic and a 241 (+25) at the Bronco Fall Invitational. Olson also recorded a top 25 finish at the USF-Richmond Country Club Invitational when she finished 18th with a 17-over, 230. Olson averaged 77.2 strokes per round with a low round of 73 (+1) in fall play.

 

Mandi Hedberg earned three top 25 finishes in four fall tournaments. Her best finish came at the USF-Richmond Country Club Invitational when she posted a 229 (+16) to finish tied for 15th. Her other top 25 finishes came at the Giustina Memorial Classic when she tied for 24th with a 15-over, 231, and at the Bronco Fall Invitational when she finished tied for 21st place with a 249 (+33). Mandi Hedberg averaged 78.5 strokes per round in the fall including a low-round of 73 (+1).

 

Lindsey Shean collected two top 25 finishes in five fall tournaments. She led the Broncos in scoring at the Heather Farr Memorial Tournament with a 9-over 225 to finish tied for 24th place. Shean then posted a 247 (+31) in the Bronco Fall Invitational for a career-best 18th place finish. She averaged 79.1 strokes per round and posted a season-low 73 (+1) in the second and third rounds of the Heather Farr Memorial.

 

Iris Ocariza has two top 25 finishes this season. Her best finish came at the USF-Richmond Country Club Invitational when she recorded a 231 (+18) to finish tied for 19th. Her other top 25 performance came at the Giustina Memorial Classic when she finished tied for 20th with a 14-over 230. Ocariza averaged 78.9 strokes per round in the fall with a low-round score of 74 (+3).

 

Amanda Nave played in one fall tournament as a member of the Bronco lineup. She registered a 258 (+42) at the Heather Farr Memorial Classic.

 

The WAC - The 2008 Western Athletic Conference Women’s Golf Championships will also be held in Fresno, Calif., at the Sunnyside Country, Apr. 21-23.
