ROCK HILL, S.C. - Sophomore Samantha Martin carded a 1-over 73 in the opening round of the Winthrop Invitational, Saturday. She owns a three-stroke lead entering the final round, and helped give the Broncos a 10-stroke lead entering Sunday.

The Broncos shot 306 (+18) as a team, 10 strokes clear of a second-place tie between Eastern Kentucky and tournament-host Winthrop at the 6,044-yard Rock Hill Country Club.

"We weren't able to play the back nine yesterday due to the rain, so I wasn't quite sure what to expect today from the course," head coach Nicole Bird said. "I'm really proud of the way our team made quick adjustments and how smart they played. It's a tough course, but we made good decisions - which puts us in a great position for tomorrow."

Martin is three strokes clear of a three-way tie for second place, which includes her freshman teammate, Oceane Pelloille (76, +4).

Sophomore Sammie Pless shot 78 (+6), joining Martin and Pelloille in the top 10.

Fellow sophomore McKenzie Ford nearly made it four Broncos in the top 10, shooting 79 (+7), one stroke back of a sixth-place tie between Pless and four others.

The Broncos have finished either first or second in four of their last six tournaments, including a second-place effort at their last tournament, the Colby Invitational. The Broncos had entered the final round of the Colby Invitational with a two-stroke lead, but were edged by a stroke by tournament-host Santa Clara.

Rounding out the scoring for the Broncos was freshman Genevieve Ling, who carded an 83 (+11) and will enter the final round tied for 22nd.

The final round of the Winthrop Invitational is scheduled to begin with a shotgun start at 7:30 a.m. MT.
