SEDONA, Ariz. – The Boise State women’s golf team played remarkably on the first day of the Red Rocks Invitational in Sedona, Ariz., carding a season-low 295 in the first round and a 301 in the second to wrap up the first day tied for third in the team standings. The Broncos (295-301, +20) were led by two under-par rounds from Genevieve Ling at Oak Creek Country Club on Saturday.

Ling posted back-to-back 69s and currently sits in second place individually, just behind Northern Arizona’s Sofia Anokhina (69-68). The senior from Selangor, Malaysia finished the day at 6-under and put herself in great position to contend tomorrow for what would be her second-career win.

“I worked on staying in the present and played one shot at a time today, and I think that paid off a lot,” Ling said after the round. “We’ve been working a lot on mental strategies and checking in with ourselves, and I’m just going to continue doing that and repeat the same thing tomorrow.”

“I’m very pleased with the way we played today,” head coach Nicole Bird said. “We were able to minimize our mistakes and our course management was much better. Gen’s performance today was awesome! She made so many birdies and got herself into the perfect position going into tomorrow. Everyone was just very steady and patient today. If we can do that tomorrow we should see the results we want!”

Fellow senior Dana Clary also performed tremendously, carding a 1-over 73 in the first 18 and following it up with a 75 to put herself in a tie for 10th place going into the final round tomorrow. The 73 is the best score of the season for the native of Cedar Park, Texas.

Freshman Jalayne Martinez also found success in the first round, posting an opening 4-over 76 for her second-best score of the year. She was solid in the second, as well, recording a 79 to put her in a tie for 36th.

Kinsley Bonfilio contributed the last counting score in the first round and tied for the lowest round of her career with a 5-over 77. She ended up with an 82 in the second and is tied for 49th.

Adara Paluhn was able to produce a timely score in the second round, firing a 6-over 78. She carded an 87 in the first round.

Boise State will begin the third round of the Red Rocks Invitational tomorrow morning at 8:30 a.m. and contend for both the team and individual titles.
