SANTA CLARA, Calif. (12/20/08) It was not pretty but the Broncos held on for a hard fought 57-51 road win at Santa Clara University Saturday afternoon in northern California. Brittany Moore (15), Courtney VanBrocklin (11), and Marisa Stotler (10) combined for 36 points to lead Boise State as the Broncos led from start to finish, including a game-high 17-point lead early in the second half. However, Boise State could never pull away from the SCU Broncos as the hosts battled back into the game down the stretch.
Boise State opened the game strong outscoring Santa Clara 19-6 in the first 10 minutes. The Broncos dominated the first period powered by Brittany Moore who scored 14 of her game-high 15 points during the first 20 minutes. The second half started off with the two teams trading turnovers early before Boise State ran off a 6-0 run to claim their largest lead of the game, 17 points, at 39-22 two minutes into the final period.
However, Santa Clara rallied slowly chipping away at the Boise State lead. SCU cut the Boise State advantage to seven points, 47-40, with 6:04 remaining in the contest. The Broncos responded by stretching the lead back out to double-digit points taking a 51-40 lead two minutes later.
Up nine points, 53-44, with 1:57 to play Boise State held off Santa Clara’s final rally attempt which saw SCU pull to within four points, 55-51, with 28 seconds to play.
Courtney VanBrocklin, a freshman from Deming, Wash., hit five of six free throw attempts in the final two minutes of the game to help keep Santa Clara at bay. The last two were key in the closing moments when she stepped to the line with six seconds left, hitting both shots to give Boise State the six-point victory margin.
