Broncos Get First Road Win at Eastern Washington
Isham scores 21 to lead Boise State.
CHENEY, Wash. - Kati Isham hit five 3-pointers and scored 21 points to lead Boise State women's basketball to its first road win of the season 72-63 at Eastern Washington Saturday afternoon in Cheney, Wash. The Broncos led from the opening basket and by as many as 17 early in the second half as they held off several EWU rally attempts. Four Broncos finished with double digit points with Nicole Brady following Isham with 13, Heather Pilcher had 12 and with Lauren Lenhardt contributing 10. The win gives Boise State a three game win streak as the Broncos improved to 7-4 overall.
The long shot was big in the first 20 minutes as the teams combined for 10 in the half, five apiece. Boise State's Kati Isham was four-of-five from the arc as she scored a team-high 14 points at the break. Isham had nine of the Broncos first 17 points as Boise State slowly seized control of the game midway through the period.
Up two at 17-15 with 10:43 left in the half, Boise State rolled off an 8-2 run powered by seven Nicole Brady points including a 3-pointer at the 8:17 mark to give the Broncos a 25-17 advantage. Unfortunately, EWU countered with a 7-0 run to cut the lead to one point with 4:48 on the clock.
Isham hit her fourth 3-pointer of the contest on the next possession to give Boise State a four-point cushion at 28-24 with 4:28 remaining until half. Lauren Lenhardt then led a late Boise State surge scoring six of the Broncos final 13 points of the period as the visitors went into the half up seven at 38-31.
Boise State opened the second half with a 10-2 run to storm out to a game-high 17 point, 50-33, lead five minutes into the period. Heather Pilcher had five points during that stretch.
Boise State maintained a double-digit lead until the 7:27 mark when EWU's Brianne Ryan hit a layup to record two of her team-high 23 points as she cut the Eagle deficit to nine points at 55-46. She was the only Eagle in double-figure points hitting five-of-11 3-point shots.
The game remained a six-to-12-point contest for the remaining six minutes with Eastern Washington getting as close as six points twice late. The first came at the 2:22 mark and the score at 67-61, while the last was with less than a minute to play with the Broncos up 69-63.
Boise State answered each EWU rally attempt to record its first road win (1-2) of the season with a nine point 72-63 win in Cheney, Wash. The Broncos continue to shoot the ball well hitting 44.2 percent (23-52) from the floor, 47.1 percent (8-17) from the arc and 75 percent (18-24) from the charity stripe. Eastern Washington countered at 35 percent shooting (21-60), 38.1 percent (8-21) from the arc and 81.3 percent (13-16) from the free-throw line.
Isham led Boise State with 21 points going 7-of-11 from the floor and 5-of-7 from the 3-point arc. She added a season-high six rebounds, two assists and one steal. Nicole Brady followed with 13 points and six rebounds, while Heather Pilcher contributed 12 points, three boards, three assists and three steals. Lauren Lenhardt was the fourth Bronco in double-figure points with 10 to go with a team-high nine rebounds.
Brianne Ryan led EWU with 23 points, three rebounds, two assists and one steal. Aubrey Ashenfelter added nine points and four boards.
Next up for Boise State is a Monday night encounter at the University of Portland followed by a home game Thursday against Utah State at 3:30 p.m.
