BOISE, Idaho (12/15/07) - Boise State stormed past Sacramento State with a dominating 87-60 performance Saturday night at Taco Bell Arena Saturday night in Boise. The Broncos never trailed in the game opening on a 11-3 run as they cruised past the Big Sky’s Hornets. The dominance marks the third consecutive home game and 120 straight minutes that the Broncos have not trailed in Taco Bell Arena.
The Broncos rolled from the opening tip as Tasha Harris hit the first shot of the contest eight seconds into the period, a 3-pointer from the left corner. Boise State wasted little time taking control of the game as they ran off a 25-10 run in the first eight minutes. By the 6:09 mark of the half the Broncos had stretched that lead to 30 points, 47-17. They held Sacramento State to 20 first half points, the lowest of the season, as they took a commanding 51-20 lead into the intermission.
The second period was similar to the first as Boise State opened with a run. This time it was a 13-3 run as the Broncos went up 64-23 four minutes into the half. With 13:40 to go, Boise State removed starting guards and leading scorers Tasha Harris and Jessica Thompson out of the game for good as the score read 69-29. The Boise State lead reached its largest margin of 44 points, 76-32, with 11:42 to play.
By the 10 minute mark Boise State was playing primarily players off the bench as the starters sat and watched their teammates get solid playing time. During the final 11 and a half minutes the game turned into a horse race as the teams pushed the ball up the floor. For the Broncos it turned a little ugly as they struggled to score down the stretch. Sacramento State responded by mounting a small comeback attempt. The Hornets ended the game out scoring the Broncos 28-11 in the final 12 minutes as the Boise State advantage was cut to 27 points at the buzzer.
Four players recorded double figure points for Boise State led by Tasha Harris with 19 to go with three rebounds and a team high six assists in a season low 20 minutes of action. Jessica Thompson was not far behind with 16 points and three rebounds in 16 minutes. Sophomore center Ja'Lara Walker tied her career high for points with 10 to go with a team high eight rebounds and two blocks. Freshman Sierra Moeller chipped in 10 points, five rebounds, one assist, and two blocks. Every Bronco eligible scored during the game including five who recorded six points each: Jackie Lee, Jenna Galassi, Amanda Stewart, Melissa Rima, and Brittany Moore.
Erika Edwards led Sacramento State with team highs for points and rebounds with 12 and seven respectively. Atty Boyer, the Hornets leading scorer entering the game, scored 11 second half points after being shutout in the first period. Sami Field-Polisso was third in scoring with nine points to go with two rebounds and three assists.
The win improves Boise State to 7-4 entering their Christmas break. The Broncos, who will not play at home again until Jan. 17th when they host Utah State, extended their home win streak to eight consecutive games dating back to the final three games of last season. Boise State’s next game will be on Dec. 29th when they play their final non-conference game on the road at instate rival Idaho State before opening Western Athletic Conference action with three straight road games. Sacramento State fell to 2-8 with the loss.
