Harris and Van Hoogen combine for 36 points.

MORAGA, Calif. (12/12/09) - Boise State lost 83-72 to Saint Mary’s Saturday afternoon at Moraga, Calif., in the Broncos final nonconference road game of the year. The Broncos kept it close throughout most of the game before Saint Mary’s slowly pulled away down the stretch. Boise State had chances but could never get over the hump as their shooting woes surfaced again on the road. The senior tandem of Tasha Harris and Jessica Van Hoogen led the Broncos with a combined 36 points as Boise State fell to 8-3 on the year.

In a contest that was close from the start Boise State’s worst enemy was its inability to get shots to fall as the Broncos continue to struggle on the road shooting 32 percent (27-84) from the floor against the Gaels.

Meanwhile, Saint Mary’s finished at 53 percent (31-58) and opened the game with a 8-2 run to set the tone. The Gaels led the entire way except for a 30-29 Boise State advantage late in the first half. The opening 20 minutes was played with the Gaels stretching their lead to six or eight points followed by the Broncos battling back to within two.

Saint Mary’s took a first-half-high nine-point lead at 29-20 with 5:33 to play before break. Boise State rallied with a 10-0 run capped by a Taylor McGilbra 3-pointer to take the Broncos’ only lead of the period at 30-29 with 2:57 to play.

The Gaels answered with a 7-0 run to take a six point lead at 36-30 with 1:18 to go. Once again Boise State rallied pulling to within one at the break with a 5-0 run on five Lauren Lenhardt points to make the halftime score 36-35.

Boise State tied the score early in the second period when Harris hit a 3-pointer from the left corner to knot it up at 42 apiece. As the story went all day, Saint Mary’s answered with another run, 10-3, to take an seven-point lead at 52-45 with 15:27 to play.

The Gael advantage remained a four to eight point margin until the seven minute mark. Up six, 60-54, with 7:10 remaining Saint Mary’s slowly stretch its lead into double digits. The closest the Broncos would get in the final five minutes would be eight points, 68-60, with 4:20 to play. Saint Mary’s closed the game hitting six-of-eight free throws in the final 1:19 to clinch the victory.

Saint Mary’s dominated the paint out scoring Boise State 52 to 32, even with the Broncos out rebounding the Gaels 45 to 44 and having a 23 to seven advantage in second chance points.

Boise State was led by Harris with 19 points, four rebounds, two assists and four steals. Van Hoogen was second in scoring with 17 points, a team-high-tying eight rebounds, two assists, one block and one steal. Lauren Lenhardt finished with nine points and eight rebounds, followed by Janie Bos with eight points.

Saint Mary’s had four players finish in double-figure points led by Jontelle Smith with 20, she went nine-of-10 from the free-throw line, three rebounds, four assists, and three steals. Jasmine Smith, Jontelle’s sister, followed with 18 points, Louelle Tomlinson added 17 points, nine rebounds and 15 blocks, while Ashlee Smith, no relation to the other Smiths, added 14 points and eight rebounds.

The loss was the third in a row on the road for Boise State who will take most of next week off for finals before hosting Santa Clara University and Seattle University in a pair of double-headers with the men’s team next Saturday, Dec. 19, and Monday, Dec. 21. Saint Mary’s improves to 6-4 with today’s win.
