Isham scores career-high 22 points to lead Broncos.

BOISE, Idaho (12/11/2010) - Boise State held off a late Sacramento State run to claim a close 73-68 women’s basketball victory over the Hornets Saturday afternoon in Taco Bell Arena at Boise, Idaho. The Broncos used a short run of their own midway through the second half to take control of the game temporarily as they broke open a one-point 44-43 lead, stretching it out to a game-high 12 points, 64-52 with 4:44 to play. However, Sacramento State ran off a 10-0 run late in the contest to tie the score at 68 all with 45 seconds to play. Janie Bos then hit a clutch 3-pointer with 17 seconds left as Boise State responded with the last five-points of the game to secure the win.

The first half was played at a high pace and was close throughout with neither team leading by more than Boise State’s six-point lead in the opening minutes as the Broncos ran out to a 6-0 advantage. Sacramento State came right back tying the match at eight all with 16:51 to go in the period. Over the course of the next 16-plus minutes the two teams exchanged seven leads and were tied eight times before the Hornets took a two-point 33-31 advantage into halftime.

Kati Isham led Boise State on three-of-seven shooting from the 3-point arc ending up with 11 points at the break. Sac State’s high-scoring leader Kylie Kuhns, averaging 19 points per game coming in, had a Hornet-high seven points. Boise State shot a season-low 25 percent (9-36) from the floor for a half in the first 20-minutes, while Sacramento State hit 37 percent (13-35). The Hornets dominated the paint in the first period out scoring the Broncos 16 to four.

The second period opened like the first was played, close and fast. It was not until midway through the half that the Broncos were able to make a little run shifting momentum their way. Up 44-43 with 12 minutes to play, the game went to the long ball as Nicole Brady, Isham and Lauren Lenhardt hit three-consecutive 3-pointers, Sac State’s Sami Field-Polisso hit one as well during that time span, to give the Broncos a seven-point lead, 53-46, with 8:55 remaining.

With momentum favoring the Broncos, Janie Bos hit a jumper with 4:44 to play that stretched Boise State’s advantage to a game-high 12 points at 64-52.

But as they did all game, the Hornets did not give up fighting back into contention in the final five minutes. Down 10 points at 68-58 with 2:42 on the clock, Sacramento State rolled off 10-straight points powered by eight from Field-Polisso, including two 3-pointers,  to pull the Hornets even at 68 apiece with 45 seconds to go.

With time running out and the pressure building, Boise State responded. Following a Boise State timeout where coach Presnell called a play for Isham, the Hornets came out and denied her the shot. Instead of forcing a bad shot, Isham passed the ball to Bos who was wide open on the high-left wing where the senior nailed a huge 3-pointer with 17 seconds on the clock for a 71-68 Bronco advantage.

Sacramento State drove under the basket on their next possession but turned the ball over when the ball-handler stepped out of bounds. Boise State’s Cinnamon Lister was immediately fouled with four seconds left. The freshman from Corona, Calif., calmly stepped to the line and iced the game hitting both free throws giving Boise State the final five-point winning margin.

Once the Broncos took the lead at 36-35 on a Isham 3-pointer at the 17:07 mark of the second period, Boise State never trailed again. There were four more ties but they refused to fall behind on the scoreboard. They also shutdown the Hornets in the paint during the second half out scoring the visitors 14 to six in the final 20 minutes.

Boise State found its shooting touch in the second period converting 48.5 percent (16-33) from the floor. They also shot 53.8 percent (7-13) from 3-point range. On the day, the Broncos shot  a season-low 36.2 percent (25-69) from the floor, a solid 41.4 percent (12-29) from downtown and 78.6 percent (11-14) from the charity stripe.

Isham led the Broncos with her third 20-plus-points game of the year with a career-high 22 points, going 8-of-18 from the floor and five-of-10 from the arc. Janie Bos turned in her third-consecutive and fourth double-double of the year on 11 points and team-high 10 rebounds, she also had two assists and two steals. Brady recorded a career-high 11 points along with two rebounds and one steal. Lenhardt was the fourth Bronco to finish in double-digit scoring with 10 points, to go with seven boards and one block.

Sacramento State had a trio in double-figure points, led by Tika Koshiyama-Diaz and Sami Field-Polisso with 17 apiece. Kylie Kuhns finished with 11 points and a team-high nine rebounds. The Hornets finished the game shooting 36.8 percent (25-68) from the floor, 34.3 percent (12-35) from behind the arc and 54.5 percent (6-11) from the free-throw line.

Boise State improves to 7-3 on the year with the win over the Hornets, while Sacramento State falls to 3-8 overall. The Broncos have finals this week, but will be back in action next weekend when Boise State wraps-up the pre-Christmas schedule with a trip to Utah for a pair of contests at Weber State University in Ogden on Saturday and at Utah Valley University in Orem  on Monday.
