BOISE, Idaho (12/10/08) Boise State won a hard fought game over instate rival Idaho State 65-58 Wednesday night in Taco Bell Arena at Boise. After running out to a 13-point lead early in the contest the Broncos had to battle down the stretch to withstand a feisty Bengal team in the second half. Marisa Stotler and Brittany Moore each recorded 14 points to lead Boise State past Idaho State as the Broncos claimed their sixth-consecutive victory over their rivals from eastern Idaho.

 

The game opened with Boise State running out to an 18-5 lead with five minutes gone in the first half. The Broncos converted seven of their first 10 shots during the run while ISU went two-of-seven and turned it over three times.

 

The 13-point advantage was short lived as the Bengals came storming back with a 16-6 run to cut it to three-points, 24-21, with 7:15 left in the period. Boise State held onto the lead eventually taking a four-point, 34-30, lead into the break. Brittany Moore scored 10 of her team-high 14 points in the opening 20 minutes on four-of-eight shooting from the floor.

 

The second half was a battle which saw both teams struggle with consistency and decision making. Idaho State opened the final period with a 7-2 run topped off by a Michelle Grohs 3-pointer to give the Bengals their first lead of the game at 37-36 with 17:13 to play. The contest remained a six-point or less contest that went back and forth with five ties and four lead changes in the final 17 minutes.

 

Idaho State took its largest lead of the night 44-41, three points, with 14:11 remaining. They held onto the scoreboard advantage for the next four minutes before the Broncos regained the lead for good.

 

Down two, 47-45, with 11:02 to play Boise State’s Marisa Stotler scored on a short jumper to tie the game up. A few moments later the Broncos’ Heather Pilcher was fouled, she stepped to the line and nailed both free throws giving Boise State the lead at 49-47.

 

The Broncos never trailed again even though there would be two more ties before Boise State was able to get some breathing room down the final stretch. Tied at 51-51 with 8:36 left, Stotler became a force down low scoring eight points as the Broncos outscored the Bengals 14-to-seven in the last eight minutes to seal the victory.

 

Three Broncos finished the night with double-figure points. Stotler tied for the team-high in scoring with 14 points, 12 in the second half, to go with six rebounds, one assist, and a team-high three steals. It was Stotler’s fourth-consecutive game in double-digit points. Brittany Moore tied Stotler’s point output with 14 points to go along with three boards and a assist. Sierra Moeller was third with 11 points, five rebounds, one assist, one steal, and tied her career-high for blocks with three. Janie Bos had a team-high 10 rebounds to go with four points and one assist. Senior Jamia Malone was solid again finishing with eight points, three assists, two steals, and a career-high eight assists, while committing only two turnovers at the point position.

 

Idaho State was also led by three players in double-figure scoring. Senior forward Michelle Gorhs had a team-high 16 points and 10 rebounds, followed by Jenna Brown with 13 points and Verity Peets’ 10 points and six boards.

 

The victory moves Boise State back to .500 at 5-5 on the year, while Idaho State fell to 3-7 with the loss. Next up for the Broncos is the first of three consecutive games against the West Coast Conference. They travel this weekend to Los Angeles, Calif., where they will play Loyola Marymount (7-1) at 2:00 p.m. (Mountain) Sunday afternoon.
