DAVIS, California (12/08/06) Boise State rallied from 12 points down in the first half to edge UC Davis 58-56 Friday night in northern California. Jessica Thompson led the Broncos with a team high 13 points as the Broncos defeated UC Davis for the second time this season. However, the rematch was much tougher than the first game in Boise to open the season when the Broncos won 73-56.

The second round with the Aggies was a struggle from the start as the Broncos had troubles making their shots hitting 20 percent (6-of-30) in the opening period, including one in the first 12 minutes of the game. Boise State trailed 15-3, 12 minutes into the game as UC Davis sprinted out to a quick lead before going cold from the floor as well.

The Aggies claimed a 15-3 lead with 10:42 remaining in the first period. The score did not change again until the 7:29 mark when Boise State’s Jackie Thompson hit a pair of free throws to make the score 15-5. Jessica Thompson and Michelle Hessing then hit a pair of layups to close within six points at 15-9 with 4:30 left in the game.

The two teams then traded baskets to close the half. The Broncos’ Nadia Begay hit a three-pointer from the right corner at the buzzer to make the Aggie advantage six, 24-18, at the break.

The second half was a complete opposite from the first period for Boise State. The Broncos were on fire early hitting 75 percent of their shots in the first ten minutes of the period as they battled to claim their first lead of the game. Boise State’s Rebecca Kepilino tied the score at 32-32 on a short jumper five minute into the half. The Broncos then took their first lead at 34-32 on a Tasha Harris layup with 14:57 remaining in regulation.

The two teams then traded leads eight times along with five ties in the final 14 minutes as they bumped up their intensity. Boise State’s largest lead of the game was four which they held twice in the second half, the last coming with five seconds to play when Harris hit two free throws to ice the game. UC Davis’ largest lead of the game was 12 points midway through the first half. Once Boise State claimed their first lead five minutes into the second half, the Aggies’ largest lead in the final 15 minutes was two points.

The Broncos finished the game hitting 37.7 percent from the floor, including 54.8 percent (17-of-31) in the second half. UC Davis shot 34.4 percent from the floor in the game as Boise State out scored the Aggies in the second half 40-to-32. Boise State also dominated the boards in the final stanza out rebounding the Aggies 24-14 and 45-to-37 in the game.

Jess Thompson led the Broncos in the game with 13 points to go with two rebounds, three assists, and three steals. Michelle Hessing battled as flu bug to finish second in scoring with nine points along with her four rebounds and three blocks. Sophomore Rebecca Kepilino added eight points and seven rebounds.

On the boards four Broncos recorded seven to eight boards in the game led by Jackie Lee and Jess Thompson’s eight apiece backed up by Tasha Harris and Kepilino with seven each.

Leading UC Davis were three players in double-figure scoring beginning with Laura Thomas’ 15 points on 5-of-6 shooting from three-point range. Heather Bates recorded a double-double with 11 points and 13 rebounds, followed by Haylee Donaghe with 11 points.

The win improves Boise State to 6-3 on the year with a road game at San Francisco (3-5) Sunday afternoon, tipoff is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. (pacific). UC Davis falls to 2-7 with their second loss of the year to Boise State which defeated them in the season opener 73-56 on November 10 in Boise.
