Presnell Gets 500th Career Win as Broncos Defeat Seattle U. 66-57...
Isham scores 20 to lead Broncos.
SEATTLE, Wash. (12/5/2010) - Boise State University’s women’s basketball team held off a second-half Seattle University rally to give head coach Gordy Presnell his 500th career victory with a 66-57 road win Sunday afternoon at the Connelly Center in Seattle, Wash. The Broncos dominated the first half and led by as many as 28 points early in the second period when Redhawks battled back into the contest. After Seattle U. pulled to within 10 points, Janie Bos and Kati Isham stepped it up late combining for 12-consecutive Bronco points to help Boise State hold off the Redhawks. Isham finished the game with a team-high 20 points to lead the Broncos to the victory.
“I was really proud of the way the team played,” said Presnell. “In the second half they hung in there when things got close, they did not fold. We fought hard today. It was key for us to have a couple of our upper classmen step up down the stretch with (Janie) Bos and (Kati) Isham hitting some key shots late.”
Boise State opened the game struggling at first to get shots to fall going two-of-eight. But still managed to take a 9-2 lead five and a half minutes into the contest. Once the Broncos settled down, they took control of the game hitting 13 of their final 19 shots of the period to race out to a 21-point lead (39-18) at the half.
Kati Isham led Boise State in the opening 20 minutes with 11 points powered by three-of-three shooting from the 3-point arc. Diana Lee and Stacie Gross added six points each. They were followed by Janie Bos with four points and a team-high eight rebounds at the break.
Boise State finished the first half shooting 56 percent (15-27) from the floor, 63 percent (5-8) from the arc and 80 percent (4-5) from the free-throw line.
Seattle U. was led by Tatiana Heck with seven points, followed by Salena Dickerson with six points and six boards. The Redhawks struggled shooting going 23 percent (8-35) from the floor, 8 percent (1-13) from the 3-point line and 33 percent (1-3) from the foul line in the first period.
The Broncos opened the second half with a 7-0 run to take a 28-point lead (46-18) two minutes into the period. Diana Lee hit a short jumper at 13:58 to give the Broncos a 50-25 advantage. Boise State would then go ice cold from the floor suffering through a scoring drought of six minutes. Boise State went 0-5 from the floor and turned it over six times during the stretch.
Bos broke the scoring drought for Boise State with a pair of free throws followed by a field goal to give the Broncos a 54-52 lead with 6:48 to left. Bos’ field goal at 6:48 was the first field goal for the Broncos in six minutes and 10 seconds.
Meanwhile, Seattle came storming back to make a game of it with a 17-2 run to pull within 10 points at 52-42 with 7:13 to go. The Redhawks shot seven of 11 from the floor and three-of-five from the charity stripe to close in on the Broncos. The contest was then a battle as the Redhawks pushed to Broncos to the end. Seattle closed to within seven points five times, the last at 62-55 with 2:14 remaining, but could get no closer.
Bos and Isham rallied the Broncos combining for 12 points in the final nine minutes as Boise State held off Seattle.
